Here y is " by cold war", so x should start with "by".
Only B and D left
2) Modifier or PARALLEL
Funded by ....... ACTS as a Modifier to the first clause, which is wrong..
The second clause should be PARALLEL to first and therefore should be joined by AND

A.physics, funded by either -funded seems to be modifying theories in physics; incorrect parallelism

B.physics, funded either by -funded seems to be modifying theories in physics

C.physics, either funded by -Incorrect parallelism; funded seems to be modifying theories in physics

D.physics and have been funded either by -CORRECT

E.physics and have been either funded by -incorrect parallelism
