On a different note, I just got an invite from Haas. Judging by this forum, it seems like they're still in te beginning waves for this, so give it some time. Good luck to everyone!

Hey everybody,

I'm working on my application now, and am wondering what your thoughts are about the optional essay question "If not clearly evident, please discuss ways in which you have demonstrated strong quantitative abilities, or plan to strengthen quantitative abilities. You do not need to list courses that appear on your transcript."

I scored relatively low on the quant section of the GMAT (77th percentile). While I know this isn't the worst thing ever, I know it's not good and I'm wondering if I should address it via this optional essay.

To add some context, I have an academically strong quantitative background (economics w/ a 3.8+ gpa in quant courses) and strong quantitative work experience (analytical work in municipal financial consulting). I also specifically asked my recommenders to comment on my quantitative abilities. Typically I was scoring 98th+ percentile on the quant section on my practice GMATs, but I just messed up the timing on the real deal.

My initial inclination is not to worry about writing this optional essay and to let the rest of my application speak for itself, but I just wanted to see if any of you thought that is an error in judgement.

Thanks and best of luck to everybody!

Go Bears!
Matt

I would also not go and self incriminate myself and say i have a low gmat. I think as long as applicants in your pool engineering/finance/male/white/asian etc have a comparable score i dont think it will harm you too much. I think you can skip it

OhDenny,

Just curious, prior to the interview invite, when did you receive the email saying your application had gone under review? Thanks.

I recieved that particular e-mail on 10/13. Submitted 10/9. But I seem to remember Stephanie saying at a Haas event that they mix the applications up so the order of submission isn't relavent. Did I dream that up?

One thing with the off-campus interviews - they've asked you to pick a location before you pick a date. This is so they can match you up with an interviewer and you can arrange a time directly with them. This is great if you have a home base, but I travel quite a bit, so may have to go a couple of rounds with Admissions to get something on the calendar. Not that I'm complaining! Just glad to be interviewing.

Hope everyone is okay!

I was an undergrad at berkeley and I lost 3 friends while I was there to random bullsh*t... this shooting makes me so sick to my stomach. At a place like USC you know the area is sh*tty so you stay in your little bubble, but Cal wasn't supposed to be like that, and it is. With that said...

If you are reconsidering applying, I urge you not to have a knee jerk reaction to this. I am still applying, and I've "been there, done that." The education I received was phenomenal, and this isn't the schools fault... especially the b-school... but this is really upsetting. On the bright side, the campus police responded really quickly which is a huge plus. I am going to call my friend on their service and give him congratulations to pass on to his colleagues.

I'll be waiting with bated breath for more information.

OhDenny,
First of all congrats for your invite ..
I wanted to ask you that you received the email saying your file is ready for review about a month back .. around 13 October? Also did you status change prior to this interview invite .. saying that your file has been reviewed or was the status same .. saying "Application is being reviewed" ..?

Thanks ..

I'm pretty sure there was no "file is done being reviewed" update. If any school would do that, it'd be Haas, but I'm also pretty sure most schools only update statuses for submitted, under review, and invited to invite (and then accept, waitlist, ding, etc.)
