Re: Kellogg 2012 - Calling All Waitlist Applicants [#permalink]
Yes, the process was almost identical last year. However, do note that the FAQs state that the majority of decisions would be out on the two dates. I distinctly remember a few folks from last year's waitlist thread who were on the R1 waitlist and did not get a decision even after R3! Needless to add, they were not happy campers. Hopefully none of us end up in a similar situation!

Thanks for starting this. Based on the FAQ it does not seem like they really expect us to send any updates and will send us potential updated decision by the end of Jan. Is that how it was last year?

Yep that's what it seems like...fingers crossed!

So the FAQ says not to contact them until after 3 January. Anybody going to place a call sooner than that?

I wouldn't call them any sooner. It says not to call, so I assume there's a reason. Could reflect negatively if you call sooner because it shows a lack of respect for their wishes and time. Just my input, others might feel differently.

As a former waitlister who was accepted, good luck to all of you. I applied R1 3 years ago (has it really been that long?) and was waitlisted the day before the notification date. I was admitted along with the R2 applicants in mid-March.

Just be patient with the process. A waitlist means that you are good enough to make a meaningful contribution to life at Kellogg, but they just want to see how the R2 applicant pool looks before finalizing anything. Further if you have any meaningful updates to tell them, by all means let them know, but don't get in touch just for the sake of getting in touch.

Personally, I only sent one update in late February and that was because I'd been working on a new product for a consumer electronics company. In my application, I'd described my work but not with too much detail. When my company went public with the new product, I wrote to offer more information regarding my contribution.

Good luck to all of you with the process!

Thanks for sharing! Do you have the data (such as yield rate of WLers) so we can count our theoretical chances? Btw, the adcom letter to WLers mentioned two dates - Jan 24 and Feb 14 as the decision date for WLers, don't know whether it was the same case three years ago? Thanks.

I don't know how things have changed with the admissions team. However, I do know classmates who applied R1 and didn't get accepted until August. For a select few this process can drag on for a long time. That said the majority will get accepts/dings the round after they applied.

The volume of applications is very hard to predict, as is the strength of the middle of the road applicant pool. Depending how R2 applications pan out plays a large part of what they will need to do with the waitlisters. This is common across almost all schools.

Did any of you send them a thank you mail/update mail or holding that off until Jan 3?

I think if you wanted to send a thank you, it wouldn't be a big deal. As for the update, I would hold off until Jan 3 as they requested. They have to update your files and keep track up the updates, so it's more work than just reading a thank you. Another way to look at it also is that they are going to review your file later in January, so the contact with adcom might go further, in terms of name recognition after you call them, if you contact with a meaningful update closer to the review period. If you contact them earlier, it doesn't mean that they are going to review your file and admit your sooner. It just means you didn't listen to their explicit instructions to wait to contact until after Jan. 3.

I know the dates for hearing back are set for Kellogg, but I am currently seeking sponsorship from the company I work for and their decision date is Feb 6th. Is it wise for me to send Kellogg a thank you note and reference this date? I am not sure how it would be viewed by the adcom. Thanks!

I would call them after the 3rd and just chat with them over the phone. Sending them something now will probably go unanswered until after the new year anyway.

Question for wailisted applicants...

Did anyone happen to call Kellogg Admisssions today? What information did the admissions office provide? Did they give any feedback or gave an indication what can be done to improve the chances?

Thanks,
Ash

I called and was given a point of contact for my application. I haven't had any more communication beyond that.

Same here. I talked with my contact and he told me there was nothing wrong with my app. It was just a matter of waiting to see how they would fill the spots.
