The first segment of the statement mentions the color-discriminating apparatus of the human eye. So, the second segment should also mention a part of the insects' eye. Only then would the comparison be appropriate.
In B, you will be comparing avocado seeds to avocadoes
"that of an insect's eye" correctly compares the color-discriminating apparatuses. Hence D is correct

C) is out, Subject verb agreement. Depends should replace depend
A) B) are wrong, it is compareing the color-discriminating apparatus to the insets' eye
E) is wordy, "the" is not correct.

Ans is D

Like the color-discriminating apparatus of the human eye, insects’ eyes depend on recording and comparing light intensities in three regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

(A) insects’ eyes depend on -> compare apparatus of human eye with that of insects' and not insects' eye itself.-> eliminate
(B) an insect eye depends on -> eliminate -> same reason as above
(C) that of insects depend on the -> the is misleading .Apparatus of insect eyes and not insects.eliminate
(D) that of an insect’s eye depends on ->CORRECT
(E) that of an insect’s is dependent on the -> the is misleadig again.eliminate

IMO (D) answer please ......... :)

Original sentence has following issues

1) comparing apparatus with insects' eyes
2) depend is plural but the verb required is singular

D corrects both these problems

(A) insects’ eyes depend on - wrong comparison
(B) an insect eye depends on - wrong comparison
(C) that of insects depend on the - 'insects' what???
(D) that [the color-discriminating apparatus] of an insect’s eye depends on - correct
(E) that of an insect’s is dependent on the - 'insects's' what???

You are correct, that of X's is wrong.

But in the problem at hand we are essentially saying

the color-discriminating apparatus of eye of the insect. (insect's is modifying eye).

The following usage would be incorrect:

that of the eye's

Like the color-discriminating apparatus of the human eye

"That" refers to the color-discriminating apparatus So A and B are out

C has insects we need to compare human eye and insect eye

D is correct

Can anyone explain Option E is it incorrect cos it changes the intended meaning of the sentence?

Like the color-discriminating apparatus of the human eye, insects’ eyes depend on recording and comparing light intensities in three regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

(E) that of an insect’s is dependent on the

E is incorrect because you cannot say " that of an insect’s": it's a "double" possessive. You can say (generally speaking) " that of an insect" or "insect's" to express possession, but you cannot use both. Moreover "That" should point to "apparatus " and E looks like this:
(E) that(apparatus) of an insect’s is dependent on the you want to compare the apparatus of the eye (not of the insect in general).
Example: you want to compare the size of the moon to something, you can say "like that of the moon" or "like the moon's": "like that of the moon's" is incorrect.

D)that of an insect’s eye == that of an eye of an insect. Here the double possessive is fine because the last one (insect’s) refers to the eye, where in E(and in my example) both forms pointed to the same thing.

Hope it's clear

(D) that of an insect’s eye depends on

why B is not correct. Please explain. .

Thanks

Hi guys,

lets examine each choice independently:

A) This choice incorrectly compared "color-discriminating apparatus of the human eye" with the "insects eye". Incorrect
B) Like the prevoius choice, B is also incorrect
C) In this choice 'that' is correctly used [ That= color-discriminating apparatus ] but we need color-discriminating apparatus of insect's eys not insect itself!. So cross off C
D) Everything looks fine and the comparison is logical. Big contender!
E) This choice used double possesive. For sure no one likes double possesive ;) so it's incorrect and ilogical.

So Pick D

Happy days!

The trick in this question is that human eye is not being compared with the insects eye, it is rather a certain feature capable of doing something is being compared with the insects eye.

So in order to make the correct comparision we need to compare both the features. Although I was initially tempted with A the Correct answer is D which compared the feature of human eye with insects eye and also has correct subject verb agreement.
