gsgcHello All,
This is my first post on this wonderful site.
My Profile : Indian Male IT with more than 12.5 Yrs exp which includes 131 weeks of Intl exp - UK & France.
I have appeared for GMAT twice -
Oct 09 - > 500 [Q 40, V 19] - With preparation but could not complete quant section, was slated to score >= 48 in quant but eventually scored only 40.
Dec 10 - > 490 [Q 42, V 16] - Without preparation, was quite busy with office work.
I gave GMAT Prep 1 test on 12th May 12 and only scored 540 [Q 44, V 21].
I want to score >= 650. I am planning to give my exam on 28th Sep 12.
I have attached my plan.
* 441 Quant is a collection of 441 PS questions from a decent training company in India.
* Quant Red is a collection of 700-800 level questions from a decent training company in India.
Pls provide me your valuable inputs soon.
It will be really nice on your part.
Thanks
GSGC.
mohaterBlindly studying (crashing through problems) is not always a good way to go. With your verbal score, it's apparent you have very specific weaknesses across all topics covered in verbal, and the GMAT is very good at honing in on your weaknesses.
Start off with a practice test (any one, GMATPrep, Kaplan, Veritas, etc.). Figure out what your weakest topics are (RC, SC, CR, DS, PS, etc.) and work from your weakest section up. Read the book review thread (best-gmat-books-118706.html) to use the material that best address your weaknesses.
Best of Luck
gsgcHi Mohater,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Do you feel that the plan is OK to execute?.
1. CR - Weakest
2. RC - Weaker
3. SC - Weak
I have already covered the following before appearing for GMAT Prep1 on 12th May 12 -
1.
OG 12 - 1 Time
2.
OG 12 Verbal Review - 1 Time
3.
OG 11 - 1 Time
4.
MGMAT Number Properties - Multiple Times
5.
MGMAT Word Translations - Multiple Times
6.
MGMAT SC Old Version - Multiple Times. This I am able to understand. Tried going through the latest version but not comprehend it well. I feel it is quite difficult to implement the rules mentioned in the latest version in the actual exam.
MGMAT CR - 2 Times Earlier - Do you feel I should go through Powerscore LSAT CR Bible?.
Regards,
GSGC.
rniIf you consider your CR to be weak then Powerscore is a must.Manhattan SC 4th edition is the real stuff. If you go through it multiple times, you will get a hang of it.
I do not understand how did you decide the execution count. Reread a book only if you feel that you didn't understand the content well the first time. Practice is the key.
mohaterYou're focusing on practice problems. That approach works for some people, but not all people.
Take a step back and try to figure out what specific concepts are dragging you down. Number agreement with nouns/pronouns (company:its, everyone:his/her, etc.), tense agreement, extreme words in RC/CR, etc.
Find materials that best supplement these weaknesses. The GMAT is an adaptive test. When it pinpoints weaknesses, you will not progress in certain areas (luck is involved, so it's possible, but not likely). It's very easy to read an explanation and say "oh I get it". It's much harder to apply it.
Are you keeping an
error log?
gsgchi mohater,
i am not just focussing on practice problems.
i did the specific gmat books multiple times so as to master the concepts.
i am not very clear on the strategy part for each question type within each verbal section [specially cr & rc].
i am weak at both cr & rc verbal sections.
rni has suggested lsat cr bible.
what is the best rc book to read?.
i think rc will improve with practice.
although long time back i read
mgmat rc guide, which i feel is not upto the mark.
hi rni,
the execution count is because i wanted to master the concepts so i read the specific guides multiple times.
==========
kindly suggest the best path forward asap.
thanks
gsgc.
mohaterThe definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
Your approach is wrong. Reading the books helps if your needs are addressed by the books. If they're not, then you might "feel" as though your learning, but your practice tests and real test sittings indicate otherwise.
I believe an
error log will be a major contribution to achieving your goal.
gsgcHello,
Thanks for the inputs and comments till now.
I have downloaded
error log GMATClub_Error_Log_V3.0 from gmatclub.
I will incorporate the same in my study.
I have old versions of both Powerscore GMAT CR Bible & LSAT LR Bible.
Do I need the latest version?.
If no then which one to go for?. If yes I will buy the same.
I plan to buy
OG 13 & LSAT RC Bible.
I plan to go through
MGMAT SC guide latest version multiple times.
Should I go through SC 1000, CR 1000 & RC 3000 later in my study?.
I completed some 100 questions from 1000 SC but then thought it is better to go through official questions rather than questions with improper or insufficient explanations.
For Quant my target primarily is to go through 700-800 level questions +
OG 13 + Veritas Project GMAT [stats, permutation, combination & probability book].
I have downloaded 700 GMAT Data Sufficiency Questions With Explanations from gmatclub.
I have heard post June 12, SC will have less idioms and more meaning based questions. Is it true?.
Apart from new IR section, what all changes are expected in GMAT post June 12?.
Pls provide your valuable inputs so that I can update & then execute my gmat study plan soon.
I have re-scheduled my test for 28th Sep 12.
Regards,
GSGC.
