Confussed with II GMAT attempt score .... help plsss!!!

Any input to help me plan my next attempt will be really appreciated !!


So here is the background...
I gave my first attempt back in April and scored 670 ( Q 47 / 34 V ). I was disappointed with the average performance in both sections, guess what more determined to give it a another try !!!

Here story unfolds .. II attempt 2 days back ---- 680 ( q 50 / v 31 ) !!

Having engineering background, I was quite confident about Quant and knew little more study is needed to nail this section . Which i did !!! Got 50 in this section. To improve my score i did MGMAT advanced Quant and Gmat prep questions.

But VERBAL let me down big time ... I was aiming a high score of 40+ here but scored just 30 :( .....

I am disapponted but confused too.. As I had put lot of effort in my VERBAL preparation for II attemp... I did all OG 12 problems , OG Verbal Review problems, Gmat Prep Questions, watched Thursdays with Ron and maintained error log while doing my preperation. During my preperation I kept revising the startegies and error log, as well as did problems with timing in consideration.

And I was seeing the results in my MGMATS... I scored a high of V 42 and low of V 37 in the 5 tests that I gave... On the test day I was quite confident to score in this range !!!! But result surprised me :( :( Really no clue what happened to my performance during the test .... Can anyone help me explain this ???

So here I need your help big time !!!!

I am ready to jump back again and beat the GMAT!!! I know I have done quite a bit of preperation and guidance is all what I need from here on.

I am planning to give GMAT by October first week, as planning to submit applications by Round 2 deadlines... So with one month of period and seeing my preparation , please suggest me how I should proceed from here ... I am open to any suugestion ranging from Books to Tutorial courses...

Just a heads up : I am worst at RCs, n these pull me down big time.. I am average confident on my CR and SC skills ..

I was wondering if maybe some Gmat Fiction couldn't help; maybe your english skills deteriorate under pressure because you are not comfortable enough within its boundaries, even thou you might know very well how to tackle SC, RC or CR.

What about your GMATPrep scores during your 2nd attempt ? I would advice you to score 40+ in at least 2 GMATPrep mocks and not in anything else to expect the same in actual test. If you repeating the test, then sit for entire duration of the time - take two mins to finish the question or eliminate choices based on reason rather than on memory, look for some new error in the same question. Don't finish the mocks early on, doing so will not improve your endurance to sit for the actual test. Stamina plays a vital role in verbal score, so work on it as well. For RC improvement, look out for thursdays with ron videos - they are helpful in lot of ways.

@Highdiving - thanks for pointing out wat cud be wrong and I agree it is something to do with exam environment. As I find myself more of gazing thru paper while on GMAT , but while doing mocks I cud reason the answers well ...


@ msvel2304 - I think that was the mistake I did... Cudnt take GMAT prep exams... As I thought I have covered the questions from the GMAT prep question banks available on GMAT club ... But I liked the strategy to do these anyways ... as I feel GMAT verbal is something very different on GMAT exam n as we see in other resources ...

I am planning to do power score verbal bible, before I hit mock test again. Also considering the option of e-GMAT ... Which one is better ??

Apart from this what you wud suggest Fmy for improving nxt attemp ?? Is one month enough to see significant improvement ??

Your plan sounds fine. Find your weak topics and work on them. Use OG to improve and stay away from unofficial sources. E Gmat, i guess, uses official problems only to teach you. Try to improve your stamina, it plays a vital role in determining your verbal score.

I think GMAC has revised the GMAT scoring algorithm. I noticed the difference even on the GMAT Prep exam. I took one before June 2012 and one after and i though the Verbal score was much lower than i had expected (3-5 points less than MGMAT).

Even i have gone back to the basics, especially for CR & SC. I've started reading the GMATClub Verbal book and Powerscore CR Bible. Just wish CR Bible had more problems.

While many test prep companies are close to GMAT style in quant, only GMATPrep gives an accurate estimate when it comes to verbal ability, no other test prep mocks are as close to GMAT, even MGMAT.
