(A) the growth of information technology has been more rapid than any other business field
(B) the growth of information technology has been more rapid than any other fields of business
(C) information technology's growth has been more rapid than any other fields of business
(D) the growing of information technology has been more rapid than that of any other business field
(E) the growth of information technology has been more rapid than that of any other business field

Please answer with explanations

Hi Gmatchase

For any "Parallelism" type question, you should be on the lookout for markers i.e. something which connects a list. for ex. and, but, than etc.

Here we find "than". Then you should see if it compares two similar entity. In this case the entity compared are
"growth of information technology" and
"any other business field"

Here the entities are not parallel. You can either make the first entity similar to second entity or vice versa, whichever makes sense.
The second entity should be changed to "growth of any other business field". Now you will have to resort to process of elimination

The only option left out would be E which correctly uses relative pronoun "that" for "growth of".

Hope it helps!

Over the last 20 years, the growth of information technology has been more rapid than any other business field, but has recently begun to lag behind as newly emerging fields seem more enticing to new graduates.

here GMAT is not that willing to test you over " business filed " and " field of business" anyone can be chosen as long as the rest of the sentence is right

the " growth " we are talking about is the comparable parameter ; "than that" states that the "growth" in IT has been more than " any other business field"

(A) the growth of information technology has been more rapid than any other business field
(B) the growth of information technology has been more rapid than any other fields of business
(C) information technology's growth has been more rapid than any other fields of business
(D) the growing of information technology has been more rapid than that of any other business field
(E) the growth of information technology has been more rapid than that of any other business field
the only right choice-E

Re: Over the last 20 years, the growth of information technology has bee [#permalink]
Over the last 20 years, the growth of information technology has been more rapid than any other business field, but has recently begun to lag behind as newly emerging fields seem more enticing to new graduates.

Over the last 20 years - indicates that the effect of the event started 20 years ago and the effect still remains - hence present participle has
growth of information technology - its singular - and must be compared to growth in any other business field
that of - does this comparison

(D) and (E) remains

(D) the growing of information technology has been more rapid than that of any other business field
-the growing -is a complex gerund . it should not be used under normal circumstances , when we have a better action noun alternative - i.e. growth

Hence (E) remains and qualifies for the correct answer !
(E) the growth of information technology has been more rapid than that of any other business field

doing as a pure noun is a process. action noun is a fact . so, if the split is doing/action noun, normally action noun is correct.
I meet this split many times but I am not satisfied with the reason why doing is wrong.
pls, explain more of doing.

I can come to E but there is a problem
growth is more rapid than that of any other business field
but lag behind emerging fields
growth can not lag behind emerging field logically it can lag behind that of emerging field.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

E

The clue that tells you this is a potential parallel construction problem is the word than. This sentence is supposed to compare the growth of information technology to the growth in other fields. However, as written, the sentence is comparing the growth of information technology directly to other fields. Once you spot this, you should immediately start looking for the replacement phrase, that of. Only two answer choices contain it, D and E. However, Choice D uses the awkward and unidiomatic phrase the growing of information technology. The best answer is E.
