Re: eGMAT-CR4 - Strengthen and Weaken Questions [#permalink]
VEAH --> A
Reason:
Premise 1: VEAH System == plates on which vehicles go to generate power. Premise 2: Harvest useful energy by slowing vehicle down Conclusion: Hence Not true energy Harvesting System.

A. Correct Weakener: Provides facts about where it is used (Places where vehicles needs to stop. Hence dont slow down vehicles on purpose, hence breaking the premise conclusion relationship.
B. OFS: Talking about efficiency of engine.
C. Strengthener: Even though people wont notice, it still harvesting useful energy.
D. OFS.
E. OFS: talks about efficiency b/w existing and this new system.

Cirque --> C
Reason:
Premise 1: Acrobat: 20% Stage Time, Yet 30% mishap and 40% cost of insurance. Premise 2: Daring Acrobat perform at 50m. But Mishap at 50 (6 times) < Mishap at 10 & 20.
Conclusion: CDS lower overall insurance by asking all acrobats to perform at 50 m. (The conclusion itself sounds so silly, but anyways continuing).

A. No effect. OFS.
B. Strengthener: If 10 m cost more, logically one must ask to shift to work (or acrobat) at 50 m.
C. Correct Weakener: As it provides an alternate reason why 50 m mishaps' are few in numbers and why even though asking acrobat to perform at 50 m wont decrease the number of mishaps.
D. OFS: Past year improvements are not under consideration.
E. Holds true for both kind of mishaps, no effect.

TOI & IH --> A
Reason:
Premise 1: Problems with launching IHT in India: 1. Cost of TOI is 1/3 cost of IHT. 2. Indian News (IHT) < Indian News (TOI) {Ppl in India prefer Indian News}.
Conclusion: Market Dont Exist in any part in India

A. Correct Weakener: Provides a reason to believe that market in terms of expats are growing in India.
B. Business in India are asking for Consulting Services from IHT to expand them (Business) globally? No relation. Please let me know if i have misunderstood this option.
C. Most indian people will still prefer TOI. Hence no effect.
D. OFS, talk is abt IHT and TOI.
E. OFS.

Pundra --> B
Reason:
Premise 1: 12 yrs and 5 yrs ago, Pundra (weak) => Export of Mfd Pdts (Increase)
Conclusion: To increase export again, make Pundra Weak.

A. Historical success of the politician's reco sounds like a strengthener.
B. Correct Weakener: If 12 and 5 yrs ago, the plants were operating below capacity, then they had room to increase their production. Now, if at peak level, they cant increase prod. Thus supply wont meet demand.
C. OFS. Health of country is not in consideration.
D. Other Stable currency => if Pundra is weakened then logically export will increase. A strengthener.
E. Provides alternative reasoning to increase exports i.e. Without making Pundra weak. OFS.

Miami --> C
Reason:
Premise 1: Hotel Booking in 2011 (50,000 fewer than 2010). Miami@50 is blamed for the aforementioned drop because it included apartment bookings.
Premise 2: Miami@50 owner says 1. Only 8,000 apartments were booked. 2. Down economy is responsible for the downfall in hotel bookings.
PT: Two ways Owners claim can be weekend: 1. 8,000 apts can be booked for more than 6 times to accommodate the 50K fall in hotel bookings. 2. An instance to prove that economy didnt go down.

A. Strengthener.
B. Number of Hotel room bookings not important. OFS.
C. Correct Weakener. (Reasons above in PT). But have a doubt as in what MULTIPLE TIMES mean in this regard? 2, or 3 or say 10. Though anyways it will weaken the owners argument.
D. Profits: OFS.
E. Kind of a weakener, but the numbers are not discussed, even if most customers preferred Apartments over hotels, we do not know how many customers Miami@50 have. Say only 10K, or say 9K, in both cases it wont weaken Owners claim.

Rajat, Please let me know if i made any mistakes anywhere, even if in singling out a wrong answer choice for wrong reasons.

Thanks.
Abhishek

Premise - Acrobatic acts account for 20% of the stage time yet cause 30% of mishaps for Cirque de Soleil amounting to 40% of show’s insurance cost. The most daring of these acrobatic acts performed at a height of 50 meters however had a 6 times lower mishap rate than the acrobatic acts performed at 20 meters and 10 meters.

Conclusion - Therefore, Cirque de Soleil can lower its overall insurance costs by requiring that all the acrobats perform their acts at 50 meters.

Any option which weakens the conclusion is our answer

A. It is unlikely that the total stage times for acrobatic acts will reduce in the near future. (There is no correlation between stage time and insurance cost, eliminate)
B. Most mishaps at 10 meters cost much higher than does the average mishap does for Cirque de Soleil but 15 percent lower than the average mishap cost at 50 meters (Does not yield anything to weaken the conclusion)
C. Only Cirque de Soleil’s best acrobats, those who have mastered the most demanding moves are currently allowed to perform at 50 meters. (If only mastered are allowed that means the rest who are not so trained are not allowed. Once the not-so-trained acrobats are made to do acrobat at 50m they might increase the rate of mishap)
D. The overall mishap rate for acrobats in Cirque de Soleil has only improved slightly over the past 2 years. (Irrelevant)
E. Most acrobatic mishaps result in serious injuries that take months to heal (“Most” creates ambiguity, eliminate)

---------------------------------------------------
Conclusion: VEAH > not (THS) true energy harvesting systems

A. Car anyway have to slow down. So, energy expensed is anyway unusable. Feature of THS
VEAH > THS.
Best Choice.
B. OK. So better car efficiency, but does not have any reference to VEAH being true Harvesting system.
C. Economics never talked about.
D. Rural development not related.
E. Strong comparison. But still not related to conclusion.

Cirque De Soleil
---------------------
Conclusion: Insurance costs down > if ALL Acrobats perform in 50m.

A. Not related to conclusion.
B. Lucrative, becoz of stats. Eliminated in 2nd iteration.
C. Truly destroys the conclusion. Best Choice.
D. Genralized Statement. Eliminated.
E. No reference to insurance or 50 m.

TOI and IHT
------------------------
Conclusion: Market for IHT> does not exist in ANY part of country

A. Best Choice. Refutes conclusion.
B.Consulting services from IHT not related to newspaper sales.
C. Close call. Lucrative Choice. Eliminated in 2nd iteration.
D. Others not related.
E. Not directly linked to sales.

Pundra
-------------------------

Conclusion: Make Pundra Weak > to increase exports by SIMILAR level
A.Strengthens. Eliminated.
B.If already at peak, it cannot increase more, not by similar level. Refutes Conc.
Best Choice.
C.Economy never talked about
D.Comparison not related to conclusion.
E.Close call. Lucrative Choice. Eliminated in 2nd iteration.

Miami (Causal)
-----------------------------------------

Conclusion\Claim: Down economy > responsible for MAJORITY of the decline in hotel room bookings > NOT Apartments

A. Lucrative Choice. Eliminated in 2nd iteration.
B. Strengthens. Eliminated.
C. Multiple times. So it can be greater than 42000, destroys conclusion.
Best Choice. Refutes conclusion.
D. Not mentioned that more profits were intended.
E. Close Call. MOST worsens matters. But C is more clear.

This was my thought process.

Re: eGMAT-CR4 - Strengthen and Weaken Questions [#permalink]

Vehicle Energy Harvesting Systems

---------------------------------------------------

Argument
An energy harvesting system is one that harvests energy that otherwise cannot be utilized in any useful way. Vehicle energy harvesting systems (VEAH) comprise of a set of plates suspended on the road as speed breakers that the vehicle must go over to generate energy. Since they slow the vehicle down they harvest energy that is useful and otherwise could have been utilized. Hence they are not true energy harvesting systems.

Question Stem
Which of the above cast doubts on the claim made by the author?
Weaken Question - Need some new information to make the conclusion less believable i.e. they are true energy harvesting systems

Pre-thinking
Something that will tell us that it is a true energy harvesting system --> it harvests energy that is not useful

Answer Choices
A.The vehicle energy harvesting systems are deployed in areas such as gas stations, drive through lanes, traffic lights etc. where the vehicle is slowing down and needs to come to halt.
CORRECT ANSWER - The vehicle were anyway going to slow down and halt, so this is energy that is not useful. So it is a true energy harvesting system

B.The vehicle energy harvesting systems while deriving energy from vehicles ensure that the vehicle's engine is in the most efficient mode of operation.
INCORRECT ANSWER - 'Most efficient mode of operation' is not important. What is important is whether that energy is useful or not

C.The extra energy expensed by the vehicle would be so less that most people would not even notice it on their monthly gasoline bill.
INCORRECT ANSWER - The definition of energy harvesting system does not talk about the tolerance level - how much is energy is allowed to be expensed

D.Vehicle energy harvesting systems could be used to provide power to areas where it’s extremely inefficient to supply power through traditional means.
INCORRECT ANSWER - Use of the energy is out of scope of the argument

E.A research report by the DOE has proven that VEAH systems are more efficient than most renewable energy systems such as hydro-electric and wind power.
INCORRECT ANSWER - Comparison with other renewable energy systems is out of scope of the argument

Cirque De Soleil

---------------------

Argument
Acrobatic acts account for 20% of the stage time yet cause 30% of mishaps for Cirque de Soleil amounting to 40% of show’s insurance cost. The most daring of these acrobatic acts performed at a height of 50 meters however had a 6 times lower mishap rate than the acrobatic acts performed at 20 meters and 10 meters. Therefore, Cirque de Soleil can lower its overall insurance costs by requiring that all the acrobats perform their acts at 50 meters.

Question Stem
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?
Weaken Question - Need some new information to make the conclusion less believable i.e. Cirque de Soleil should not require all the acrobats perform their acts at 50 meters

Pre-thinking
Not everybody performs at 50 meters - Only seasoned acrobats perform at that height

Answer Choices
A. It is unlikely that the total stage times for acrobatic acts will reduce in the near future.
INCORRECT ANSWER - Total stage times is irrelevant

B. Most mishaps at 10 meters cost much higher than does the average mishap does for Cirque de Soleil but 15 percent lower than the average mishap cost at 50 meters
INCORRECT ANSWER - If 10m, 20m and 50m are the three options, mathematical calculation show they should ask acrobats to perform at 20m. We dont know if these are the only three levels. This answer choice does not weaken the conclusion

C. Only Cirque de Soleil’s best acrobats, those who have mastered the most demanding moves are currently allowed to perform at 50 meters.
CORRECT ANSWER - So all acrobats cannot perform their acts at 50 meters

D. The overall mishap rate for acrobats in Cirque de Soleil has only improved slightly over the past 2 years.
INCORRECT ANSWER - This does not weaken the conclusion. Improvement at which level? what are its implications (reduction in insurance cost?... we know nothing about it

E. Most acrobatic mishaps result in serious injuries that take months to heal
INCORRECT ANSWER - Time to heal is outside the scope and does not weaken the conclusion

Re: Here we will post the Strengthen and Weaken Questions. [#permalink]

TOI and IHT

------------------------

Argument
The problem with launching an edition of International Herald Tribune (IHT) in India is that Times of India (TOI), a national daily, can be bought for one third of the proposed price of IHT, and the TOI, whichis just as reliable, covers more national news than international news. Even through IHT has wider coverage of international events, most people in India are still more interested to know what is happening around them than what is happening in some other part of the world, which they have not even heard of. Thus a sufficient market for Indian edition of IHT may not exist in any part of the country the near future

Question Stem
Which of the following if true will weaken the author’s claim that a sufficient market for IHT does not exist in any part of the country in the near future?
Weaken Question - Need some new information to make the conclusion less believable i.e. there is a market for IHT in India

Pre-thinking
Quality of national news in IHT may be better
New generation or someone will be interested in International news in the future

Answer Choices
A.The hyper growth of the Indian economy has been and will continue to bring a large influx of foreigners and expatriates to major metros .
CORRECT ANSWER - Important words in the option - large, major. So this option suggests that market exists (due to large influx) and that too in specific parts of the country (major metros)

B.Businesses in India have been constantly demanding for consulting services from IHT to help them expand globally.
INCORRECT ANSWER - Consulting Services from IHT? This is out of scope.

C.Over the last two years, IHT has expanded its coverage of events in India, especially those related to Indian businesses and politics.
INCORRECT ANSWER - expanded - relative to what it was before. This does not tell us if it was better than TOI or any other newspapers

D.Other international newspapers who have tried to compete on price with TOI have had limited success in some pockets of the country.
INCORRECT ANSWER -Other International newspapers had limited success means that they did not succeed as they had expected. So this actually strengthens the conclusion

E.Most people in India subscribe to only one daily newspaper.
INCORRECT ANSWER - This option does not weaken the argument. One newspaper could mean TOI or IHT. IHT is anyway not trying to get a majority share in the market or anything. It just wants a market.

Pundra

-------------------------

Argument
Twelve years ago and again five years ago, there were extended periods when the Darfir Republic’s currency, the pundra, was weak: its value was unusually low relative to the world’s most stable currencies. Both times a weak pundra made Darfir’s manufactured products a bargain on world markets, and Darfir’s exports were up substantially. Now some politicians are saying that, in order to cause another similarly sized increase in exports, the government should allow the pundra to become weak again

Question Stem
Which of the following, if true, provides the government with the strongest grounds to doubt that the politicians’ recommendation, if followed, will achieve its aim?
Weaken Question - Need some new information to make the conclusion less believable i.e. pundra should not be allowed to become weak

Answer Choices
A.Several of the politicians now recommending that the pundra be allowed to become weak made that same recommendation before each of the last two periods of currency weakness.
INCORRECT ANSWER - This does not weaken. This supports the argument

B.After several decades of operating well below peak capacity, Darfir’s manufacturing sector is now operating at near-peak levels.
CORRECT ANSWER - If the manufacturing sector is already at near-peak levels, how will these industries cater to the increase in export demand. So this weakens the conclusion

C.The economy of a country experiencing a rise in exports will become healthier only if the country’s currency is strong or the rise in exports is significant.
INCORRECT ANSWER - This does not weaken.

D.Those countries whose manufactured products compete with Darfir’s on the world market all currently have stable currencies.
INCORRECT ANSWER - Stable currencies of markets that compete with Dafir does not weaken the argument. Stability of other currencies may help if Pundra becomes weaker as before

E.A sharp improvement in the efficiency of Darfir’s manufacturing plants would make Darfir’s products a bargain on world markets even without any weakening of the pundra relative to other currencies.”
INCORRECT ANSWER - improvement in the efficiency is outside the scope of the argument - Such answers are used in Cause and Effect type of questions

Re: Here we will post the Strengthen and Weaken Questions. [#permalink]
1. A . Without the VEAH systems, the energy resulted from the halting of the mentioned vehicle could be lost completely.
2. B . Mishaps at 50m have the highest insurance cost per case than any other mishaps, therefore, increase the 50m performance could lead to higher of insurance cost.
3. C . Between A & C, I choose C because it talks about the coverage field, of which is concerned in the premises
4. B . The manufacturing capacity is at peak , lowering the currency could bring up the demand but the supply is limited, hence the export can be achieved.
5. E. A is attempting but price is not what the premises care about. E presents the customers' preference hence by providing the option to rent out apartments, the website makes it possible for customers to switch from booking a hotel to booking an apartment. That's absolutely the website fault.

Miami (Causal)
-----------------------------------------

Hotel bookings in Miami are only done through travel websites. In 2011, there were 50,000 fewer hotel room night bookings then there were in 2010. Hotel owners are blaming the apartment renting service by new website Miami@50 that not only sells hotel room bookings at bargain prices but also allows people to rent out their houses. The website owners dispute the charge stating that they only rented out only 8,000 apartments through their website. They claim that the down economy and not their website is responsible for majority of the decline in hotel room bookings.

Which of the following if true most seriously weakens the Miami@50 owners claim?

A.Miami@50 rents apartments at a much lower price then it rents hotel rooms.
B.Miami@50 rented out at least 8 times as many hotel room nights bookings as apartments.
C.Most apartments in that Miami@50 rented out were rented out multiple times.
D.Miami@50’s profit from renting out apartments was higher than it was for renting out hotel rooms.
E.Most of Miami@50’s customers preferred renting an apartment to renting a hotel room
