What criteria (grammar, meaning, concision) applies in either case?
Pls elaborate....I had to strip some parts of the sentence.

What is wrong with saying "Examples were taken from sources-and indeed discussed extensively-"?

C: Many of the examples were taken from—and indeed discussed extensively in—sources that
had been compiled at an earlier time...
"examples were taken from-and indeed discussed extensively in-""...sounds choppy?

E: Many of the examples were taken—and indeed discussed extensively—from sources that
had been compiled at an earlier time...
the "examples were taken-and indeed discussed extensively-" Is it wrong to discuss the examples or elaborate on them?

So here in this sentence intended meaning is Kamuxa culture were taken and discussed.

• But "discussed extensively" is an added information so hyphen is used.
• Also parallelism need to be presented so "and" is used

So i go with
C. taken from—and indeed discussed extensively in—sources that

But among BCE, one thing is important.
Many of the examples were taken—and indeed discussed extensively—from sources that bla bla.
The correct option WILL mention that from where these examples are discussed and from where these examples are taken.
Just "discussed" will not suffice.
Without "in" in dash phrase , it appears that the examples are discussed extensively from sources. It is illogical.

Many of the examples in the new book about the Kamuxa culture were taken—and indeed discussed extensively in—sources that had been compiled at an earlier time by field researchers in the nineteenth century but were not available until very recently.

Meaning Analysis:

This sentence talks about two characteristics of many of the examples in the new book about the Kamuxa culture. Many of these examples were:
a. taken FROM sources that…
b. discussed extensively IN sources that…

Error Analysis:

The verb “taken” must be followed by preposition “from”. If we remove the part written between the dashes, then the sentence will read …examples… were taken… sources… This is ungrammatical.

PoE:

A. taken—and indeed discussed extensively in—sources that: Incorrect for the reason stated above.

B. taken from sources—and indeed discussed extensively—that: Incorrect. The information between the dashes fails to connect with the rest of the sentence.

C. taken from—and indeed discussed extensively in—sources that: Correct. Intended parallelism is maintained.

D. taken from—and indeed discussed extensively—in sources that: Incorrect. If we strike out the information between the dashes, the sentence will read “… examples… were taken FROM IN sources…”. Use of two prepositions together is ungrammatical.

E. taken—and indeed discussed extensively—from sources that: Incorrect. “discussed extensively” must be followed by preposition “in” to connect logically with rest of the sentence.

A. remove the portion starting and ending with '-' because really, it's just extra information and the sentence should flow and read perfectly without that portion. when u do so, you realize, it's.....taken...sources. No-no.
B. the portion within '-' is incomplete
C. taken from. complete. extensively in. complete. correct.
D. do the same thing as in A. it reads taken from in sources.... wrong.
E. using from like that suggests from should work with both the act of being taken and being discussed and clearly it doesn't work with the latter.
