Yes, it's usually 8-10 weeks unless you submit after merit fellowship deadline. What I'm wondering is let's say the following occurs: person A and person B submit their apps at the exact same time. A gets an invite, but B does not. Would A get an e-mail earlier than B since he got an invite and is thus "higher" priority, or would they both hear back at the same time? Columbia's adcom has stated specifically that if an applicant is very strong, he could get an invite after only one adcom member has read the application. For most invites, it would take 2-3 readers before getting an invite.

Sometimes maybe they aren't completely able to make up their mind about you, as in you may be in between where you are a good candidate and they don't want to ding you immediately. So maybe that's what causes the time lag. What are your stats anyway & how long since you submitted?

Unusually quiet for this time of the year. Very few invites have gone out for those who submitted in November.

I got an interview invite from CBS a few days ago.

Submitted full app: 11/20
Invited to interview: 12/19

So basically a month's turnaround. I also made a conscious choice to submit before the Thanksgiving break figuring that there'd be a glut of apps after that.

By the way, any advice or great samples of Columbia interview questions?

Interviews are taken into account obviously but for columbia it's not as critical as it is with hbs/stanford. Plenty of people have had mediocre interviews but gotten in, and the reverse is also true. Do your best of course, but don't go nuts if you don't think your answers were perfect. The adcom will assess the entire application again after the interview report is submitted.


Stanford interview does not count for much, I'd say the Columbia interview is more important. HBS interview is different in that it is done by the admissions committee directly so not really comparable.

Hey guys. Just got an e-mail from columbia regarding a status update, but I'm too nervous to open it!!! With columbia there's no wa of telling if it's an invite or a ding. I submitted on early morning of December 1st, for what it's worth (1 AM, i believe).

So, I submitted my application last Saturday, but my recommenders haven't submitted there stuff yet (so, so frustrating). Anyone know if that puts my in queue, or if they don't begin to consider your application until they have everything in?

My impression is that they don't start reviewing until all your components are in -- including recommendations.

It's going to depend a lot on who you interview with but most people have had fairly informal interviews. The only mandatory question is to describe a time you faced adversity. Most of the questions in my interview focused around why I wanted to switch careers. What attracted me to my new career path, etc. Just know your story and what you want to do. If you can articulate that well then I think you will be fine. I wasn't even asked to walk through my resume, it was much more like a conversation.

Quick question.

Submitted a few days ago. When I now login, am I supposed to see the status of my application somewhere? I see a page showing Recent Activities (including my fee payment) as well as some other stuff (date of app submission, rec submissions). I am getting worried as I don't see a definitive "Application being reviewed" (or similar) status. Anyone?
