Earthquakes occur when energy in the earth’s crust is suddenly released, forcing tectonic plates to shift. Earthquakes are classified as foreshocks, main shocks, or aftershocks. What differentiates one category from another is their relation to each other in space and time. A foreshock is only a foreshock if it occurs before a bigger quake on the same fault system. Similarly, an aftershock occurs only after a bigger quake on the same fault system. Interestingly, the probability that an earthquake will trigger a bigger earthquake does not depend on the magnitude of the first earthquake, but rather is related to the location of that first quake and its interaction with the fault system.

In the first column, indicate the statement that the given information most strongly suggests is true. In the second column, indicate the statement that the given information most strongly suggests is false. Make only two selections, one in each column.

False - Main shocks can be triggered by foreshocks.

True -An aftershock can be a bigger earthquake than the main shock that preceded it.


I am not sure about the top four ones,since we can't say anything straight about those

Evaluate each answer choice by comparing it to the information provided.

(A) Sentence three indicates that at least some mainshocks are preceded by foreshocks. However, nothing indicates that all mainshocks are preceded by foreshocks.

(B) Sentence four indicates that at least some mainshocks are followed by aftershocks. However, nothing indicates that all mainshocks are followed by aftershocks.

(C) The passage doesn’t provide any information about the frequency of aftershocks relative to foreshocks.

(D) Although the passage says that neither foreshocks nor aftershocks are as strong as mainshocks, it does not provide any information about the strength of foreshocks and aftershocks relative to each other.

(E) True. The passage states that the probability that an earthquake will trigger a bigger earthquake does not depend on the magnitude of the first earthquake; rather, the probability is related to the location of that first quake and its interaction with the fault system. Therefore there is at least some probability that one earthquake could trigger another.
