Re: At Legal Services, LLC last year, the average annual salary for attorn [#permalink]
GyanOne wrote:
Average salary for attorneys = $75,000
Average salary for paralegals = $50,000

The average salary for all employees is less than the average salary of either attorneys or paralegals. This serves to prove that there is at least one employee who earns less than $45,000 who is not an attorney or a paralegal but is part of the firm. This is because no matter what the number of attorneys or paralegals or their earnings, their average cannot be less than $50,000.

A), B), C), and E) cannot be properly drawn, because they do not lead to an overall average salary of $45,000 by any means. D) can be drawn, as it paraphrases exactly what we concluded above.

D) it is.

Hi Gyanone,

I noted one thing in your explanation marked in green ,however (D) says :
There was at least one Legal Services, LLC employee who earned less than the average paralegal earned last year.

Plz explain !!!

Although the best answer is (D),consider the below equations

Number of Attorneys : x their Average = 75, their sum = 75x
Number of paralegals : y their Average = 50, their sum = 50y
Some other person in firm: 1 , Salary =46

Total average = 45

(75x + 50y +46)/(x+y+1) = 45
75x + 50y +46= 45x + 45y + 45
30x + 5y = -1 ????? A -ve value .

Had it been in (D) as marked in green the person's salary would have been less than firm's average.

If the information above is correct, which one of the following conclusions can properly be drawn on the basis of it?
A. There were twice as many attorneys at Legal Services, LLC as there were paralegals last year.
B. There were more paralegals than attorneys at Legal Services, LLC last year.
C. There were two attorneys and three paralegals at Legal Services, LLC last year.
D. There was at least one Legal Services, LLC employee who earned less than the average paralegal earned last year.
E. At least one paralegal made less than $50,000 last year.

Toughest for me , Can anyone explain it

I just screwed up on this question and assumed that their are only paralegal and attorneys in the legal services. I guess the important thing to notice here or in general must be true type of question : Don't assume.
if you don't make the asumption i made than mathematically some of the statements can or can't be true. But the choice D is the only one which have to be true.
After all if the avg of x employee's salary is 50k than at least their is one employee with 50k salary.

Yes i am also agree on option D

The BLS reports that the median annual salary for paralegals was $46,990 in 2012. The best-paid 10 percent in the field made $75,410, while the bottom 10 percent made approximately $29,420.
While some states have an average paralegal salary as low as $29,000 and others as high as $63,500, the average annual paralegal salary for the entire United States ranges from around $47,000 to $52,000, or close to $22 per hour. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2014-15 Occupational Outlook Handbook that average will be a little lower in 2014-2015, as the Bureau states the median national annual salary for paralegals as $46,990. The average starting salary is around $39,938 while some may earn as little as $18,000 or as much as $110,000.

Yes. D is the correct answer because their needs to be a base assumption about some people earning less then the current average salaries to bring down the overall company wide salary to 45k.

Why are you even trying to solve it mathematically ?

If average is 45 k then why are you assuming 46 k salary. And again if it is mentioned atleast one employee of LLC , on what basis you took 1 it sould be like z no. of employees and z >=1. ??
You cannot form equations like this

Garbage in = Garbage out

E is incorrect: If all paralegals receive a salary of 50k, the average would also be 50k, so can't definitively conclude that at least one is salaried at less than 50k

E is incorrect because it may happen that every paralegal employee makes $50000 last year and then also the average would be $50000. In order to make the overall average = $45000, the other employees could be having very deviated salaries. I hope it is clear now.

What good in choices A, B, C - they talk only about attorneys and paralegals.
We can not say anything about proportion between them. We do not know this information.

And since the average salary for all kinds of employees was less than the average of paralegals and attorneys we know, that there is at least 1 kind of other employees.

D - can not infer - maybe all paralegals earn 50 000 a year.

E is good.
