Clearly, Fresh Start not only gives your teeth a beautiful look but also provides the most reliable protection against dental cavities.

Which of the following is an assumption in the argument above?
(A) No other toothpaste provides more reliable protection against dental cavities.
(B) Fresh Start's formula does a better job of whitening teeth than do competitor's formulas.
(C) People are just as interested in having beautiful teeth as they are in having healthy teeth.
(D) Fresh Start also prevents other dental disorders, such as gingivitis.
(E) Reliable protection against dental cavities, combined with excellent aesthetic properties, is likely to make Fresh Start a popular toothpaste on the market.

Conclusion: "Fresh Start provides most reliable protection against dental cavities"
(A) No other toothpaste provides more reliable protection against dental cavities.

As quoted previously ,

P1: Fresh start --- Tooth paste --- reduces risk of DC by 20%

P2: Makes teeth whiter + healthier

C: Gives Beauty +Protection

Hence , A

PREMISE - According to a recent research study, daily use of Fresh Start, a new toothpaste, reduces the risk of developing dental cavities by over 20 percent. In addition,as a result of a new formula, the use of Fresh Start results in whiter, healthier-looking teeth.
CONCLUSION - Fresh Start not only gives your teeth a beautiful look but also provides the most reliable protection against dental cavities.

Assumption could be----1. no other tooth paste reduces the risk of developing dental cavities by over 20 percent.....
2. whiter, healthier-looking teeth amounts to good look.....

Which of the following is an assumption in the argument above?
(A) No other toothpaste provides more reliable protection against dental cavities....just a restatement of conclusion....DOES'NT REALLY LINK PREMISE TO CONCLUSION..... but better than other options still..
(B) Fresh Start's formula does a better job of whitening teeth than do competitor's formulas....not really
(C) People are just as interested in having beautiful teeth as they are in having healthy teeth.....people's opinion does'nt matter...
(D) Fresh Start also prevents other dental disorders, such as gingivitis.....no other illness implied here.
(E) Reliable protection against dental cavities, combined with excellent aesthetic properties, is likely to make Fresh Start a popular ....popularity is not a factor here

IMO "A"

By poe A

A does help only a part of the conclusion i.e "most protetcive"
B - wrong: Whitening is only a small part of the good thing the toothpaste does i.e "healthier-looking teeth" healthier looking teeth may have a larger scope : no stains, no pores, no cavities etc.
C - wrong: The author does little to indicate what customers think (see conclusion)
D - wrong: This does not make the gap in logic full proof. This statement is just an added advantage of the toothpaste
E - wrong: Again the author does not want to know if the product is going to be a hit with the customers

Have problems with A.
Conclusion Clearly, Fresh Start not only gives your teeth a beautiful look but also provides the most reliable protection against dental cavities.
(A) No other toothpaste provides more reliable protection[/b] against dental cavities.

But it is already mentioned in the argument that Fresh Start is most reliable protection . so how can option A be assumption..?? Is it not repeating the same words as in argument.

It's A, Negate it.. If other pastes protect dental cavities , then why they choose fresh start , and the argument fails.
B_ Irrelevant. People don't buy for whitening teeth.
C_ People will not choose a fresh start if they have healthy teeth But just for whitening
D , E _ Irrelevant.

Re: Advertisement: According to a recent research study, daily use of [#permalink]
There are two parts to the conclusion in the argument. (1) beautiful looking teeth (2) most reliable protection against dental cavities.

(A) talks only about (2). It could be possible that there is another toothpaste out there which provides more reliable protection against dental cavities, but that toothpaste does not necessarily give beautiful looking teeth.

For that reason, I did not chose (A). Only option that spoke about both (1) & (2) is (C).

If (A) had included information about beautiful looking teeth, then it would have been more convincing.

Any thoughts?

It's explicitly stated in the argument,"most" reliable... How can it be an assumption?

Raj30 Careful there--this is actually a very common type of assumption! The premise says "X does something" and the conclusion says "X does the MOST" or "the BEST." This requires us to assume that nothing else does better.

Imagine that I was selling a GMAT book with the promise that your verbal score would go up 2 POINTS if you read it. Let's say that you believed this promise. Would you believe that this was the MOST or the BEST you could do to improve your score? Only if nothing else (either another product/plan or a combination of products/plans) could improve your score by more than 2 points. That's the assumption we have here.
