How many 1/5 miles does 8 miles contain?
= 8/(1/5) = 40
Charge for first 1/5 mile = 3.10
Charge for remaining 39 1/5 miles = 39*.4 = 15.6
Total charge = 15.6 + 3.10 = 18.70

8 Miles = 40 parts... ( Each mile = 1/5 mile )

Charges for 1st part = $ 3.10

Charges for 39 reamaining part = 0.40 * 39 = 15.60

So, Total charges for 8 miles ( ie, 40 parts ) is 18.70 ( ie, 3.10 + 15.60 )

Hence, answer will be (D)

In other words, the taxi company charges $3.10 for the first 0.2 miles PLUS $0.40 for each additional 0.2 miles.

Let's think of the 8-mile taxi ride in two parts:
Part I) The first 0.2 miles
Part II) The remaining 7.8 miles

Part I: The first 0.2 miles costs $3.10

Part II: 7.8 ÷ 0.2 = 39 0.2-mile increments.
So, the total cost of those 39 increments = (39)($0.40) = $15.60

So, the total cost of the entire trip = $3.10 + $15.60 = $18.70

Answer: D

1/5 miles = 0.2 miles.

The cost of 8 miles long ride would be $3.10 for the first 0.2 miles plus (8-0.2)/0.2*0.4 = $3.1 + $15.6 = $18.7.

it is just an unitary method:

The cost per 1/5 (0.2) miles is 0.4 beyond first 1/5 (0.2) miles.
so 0.2 miles costs 0.4, then how much 1 mile costs? 2. how 0.4/0.2 = 2.
so 1 mile costs 2, then 7.8 (=8-0.2) miles cost 7.8x2 = 15.6

so total = 3.1+15.6 = 18.7

fastest way for me...

8 miles * 5 = 40 fifths of a mile
40 * .40 = $16
$16 - .40 = 15.60 + 3.10 = 18.70

breaking it up like that lets you do the mental math in your head almost instantly. so much easier IMO.

8-1/5 = 39/5

1/5 + 39/5 = 3.1 + 0.4 * 39 = 18.7 = (D) (Answer)

We know that for the first 1/5 mile of the 8-mile trip, the taxi company charges $3.10. For the next 7 4/5 miles, each 1/5 of a mile will cost $0.40. We need to find out how many 1/5s are in 7 4/5.

Since 7 4/5 = 39/5, there are 39 1/5s in 7 4/5. Therefore, the total cost of the 8-mile trip would be:

$3.10 + 39($0.40)

$3.10 + $15.60

$18.70

Answer: D
