How do top schools look at Postgraduate/continuing Studies?

How do top schools look at Postgraduate/continuing Studies? [#permalink] New post   13 Mar 2013, 16:02
Hi there, I am not happy with my low ish GPA (3.0-3.3) and am pretty short handed when it comes to quantitative situations. Therefore I was looking into Postgraduate/continuing studies in math/quant , a certificate program to help ramp up my low GPA and to polish my quant abilities.

How do top schools look at this if they even look at post grad/ continuing education courses at all? Will I be wasting my time?

Admissions weighs your most recent academic experiences most heavily so returning to school to improve your academic performance can be beneficial. Also, admissions tends to downplay grades earlier in your academic career (especially freshman year) as they realize that people are young and have misplaced priorities.

You mean in order to subsequently do an MBA??? Can you clarify?

Yes as in doing this postgrad/continuing studies classes to put on my resume and application to offset my low GPA. So I will do a quantitative/financial continuing studies class and get a certificate in it showing I have quant abilities. Well, let's put it this way - yes, it can help, but it is not your biggest priority.... Do what you can to ensure you get on the higher end of that range you gave (a 3.3)... and then FIRST I would say concentrate on your work experience and your GMAT which are both far more important. Once you have those two main pillars, THEN work on the smaller stuff.
