This is a "Reconcile the discrepancy" question :

What is the discrepancy ?
In a community where stands only retired people and potentially few families with small children, businesses spec in rental of furniture for infants and small children are thriving

So, to reconcile this, we should look for a reason that explains why the business of something are thriving while ppl in that place don't use it for their own need.

D explains this, saying that even if retired ppl rent something that they don't use, the business stemmed from rental small children's furniture are thriving, because they must provide for the needs of visiting grandchildren several weeks a year.
( So they rent massively something not intended to their usage in order to provide for the needs of their grandchildren while visiting them and thereby thriving the business of rental because it's a matter of several weeks a year. )

I think the only reason why option B sounds better than option D is the number of customers they have, even though the basic reasoning behind both the option is same, i.e., occasionally people visit your place and you rent furniture to accommodate them. But i don't see how a few children renting furniture could lead to a thriving business.

(E) Children’s furniture available for rental is of the same quality as that available for sale in the stores
----- Doesn't explain why family with no children will have the reason to buy or rent children's furniture.

As it is a CR question lets read the question stem first, question is asking which of the following reconciles the discrepancy?

Premise:

1. Some communities are exclusively populated by retired people and contain FEW IF ANY families with small children

2. Yet business for rental of furniture for infants and small children are doing well

We should be looking to resolve the discrepancy by providing finding a link between good business and retired people

(A) The businesses specializing in the rental of children’s furniture buy their furniture from distributors outside of Florida.
- How does it matter if business buy their furniture from outside distributers, this is IRRELEVANT


(B) The few children who do reside in these communities all know each other and often make overnight visits to one another’s houses.
- It’s good that that they know each other, but as mentioned children are very few so even if they visit overnight, why would other families having children rent furniture and even if they do it will not be significant to make it a thriving business


(C) Many residents of these communities who move frequently prefer renting their furniture to buying it outright.
- Moving frequently still does not answer why children furniture is required to be rented? C is also out.


(D) Many residents of these communities must provide for the needs of visiting grandchildren several weeks a year.
- This seems logically correct as majority of the community is of retired people and hence it is natural that their grandchildren will make a visit, note the word several visits a year. This is provides a reason why they rent children furniture and hence business for children furniture is booming.


(E) Children’s furniture available for rental is of the same quality as that available for sale in the stores
- Can be possibly true but it still does not explain why retired people rent kids furniture. This option is out as well.


D is the Correct Answer

Only option C and D are worth contemplating.
Option C says that " Many residents of these communities who move frequently prefer renting their furniture to buying it outright."
The words "Many residents of these communities who move frequently " are worth noting.
The rental business of children's furniture is thriving among mostly retired people.
These section of retired people may not represent the section of people "who move frequently".
The retired people are unlikely to move frequently.
Also option C is talking about " resident's furniture " and not " children's furniture".
So option C does NOT explain the discrepancy.

Option D does that amicably.
Option D says that "Many residents of these communities must provide for the needs of visiting grandchildren several weeks a year."
So the rental business of children's furniture is thriving because retired people ( grand parents ) rent those furniture for their grand children who visit them several weeks a year.

Hence option D is the answer.

Is it only because it does not specify the type of "furniture "? or it does not bridges the Gap properly?

I thought they won't charge their grandchildren and so B is more appropriate...please help

Short answer: Nobody is charging the grandkids! They are children after all .

Choice D actually talks about grandparents renting furniture from furniture-rental companies for those times when their grandchildren visit.

Long answer: From what I see, it will be useful to discuss three aspects of this question in particular:

1. What is the exact paradox here?

2. Why is option B incorrect?

3. Why is option D correct?

Let’s keep it simple – let's visualize the information through an example to understand the above aspects!


What is the exact paradox here?

Say, there are 100 families in these communities.

Say, 95 of these families are retired folks (no children staying in the house!). Say, the remaining 5 families are families with children.

In such a market, where only 5 out of 100 families have children, one would not expect companies that specialize in renting furniture for babies and children to do well.

The paradox is that somehow, even in such a market, where 95% of homes do not even have children, such businesses are thriving (doing very well!). How is that possible?

Why is option B incorrect?

Option B: The few children who do reside in these communities all know each other and often make overnight visits to one another’s houses.

What this choice means is that the children from the 5 families know each other and visit each other’s houses. But -

1. These 5 families already have children. This means that these households, in all probability, already have the furniture needed for infants/children.

2. The children would simply be making overnight visits at households that already have furniture.

3. In other words, children making overnight visits to one another’s houses cannot really explain the success of the furniture-rental businesses.

Do you see why option B does not really help us resolve the paradox?


Why is option D correct?

Option D: Many residents of these communities must provide for the needs of visiting grandchildren several weeks a year.

95 out of the 100 households are retired folks (the age when many of us are grandparents!). Choice D suggests that many of these residents will have to get furniture at least on rent for when their grandchildren visit.

This can very well explain why these furniture rental companies are thriving. Many grandparents are simply renting furniture whenever their grandchildren visit, thus providing revenue to these businesses.

This is why option D works.
