no...i will say.

in E it is comparing protein rich diet with people...

E Meant to say....as more and more people are adopting urban life style.......,protein is also adopting urban life style.....==>so this doesnt makes sense.
because..protein cant adopt lifestyle....

hope i made it clear..

I think the correct answer is C . "in which they tend to cook less, eating more processed food and fast food" .- this bit doesnt need to be in parallel structure as it not really a list .also this seems to be the better option though i am not sure how a protei rich diet compares to the healthy genes

I picked C, but not 100% sure. Here is my 2 cents.

First of all, the intended meaning is "Like a protein, the healthy genes are diminishing........" ==> The comparison should be "a protein" vs "the healthy genes". ==> E is out first.

a) the healthy genes diminishing is due to more and more people adopting an urban lifestyle, in which they tend to cook less, eating more processed food and
Wrong comparison: "a protein" vs " the diminishing".

b) the healthy genes diminishing due to more and more people adopting an urban lifestyle is because they tend to cook less, eat more processed food, and
Wrong. Same as A. "a protein" vs " the diminishing".

c) the healthy genes are diminishing as more and more people adopt an urban lifestyle, in which they tend to cook less, eating more processed food and
Correct comparison: "a protein" vs "the healthy genes".

d) the healthy genes are diminishing as more and more people adopt an urban lifestyle cooking less and eating more processed food and
Wrong modifier: Because "cooking less.." is Verb-ing modifier and there is NO comma before it ==> "cooking" modifies lifestyle --> Wrong.

e) more and more people adopt an urban lifestyle leading to the diminishing of healthy genes, in which they tend to cook less, eating more processed food and
Wrong comparison: "a protein" vs "people".

Waiting for OA.

IMO C

A,B: Healthy genes diminishing : verb is missing and parallelism issues in the list at the end
C: Healthy genes are diminishing: fine and "in which they" : fine as "they" refers to people
D: many errors, awkward sentence and changes meaning
E: changes meaning again

hi gian,

your answer was correct but i will say your reasoning was not perfect....refer PGHAI post above
in option A/B Healthy genes diminishing is acting as a subject===and verb =IS.....So it has sub-verb ..but comparison is not cORRECT...

in option E ==>SAME ERROR COMPARISON IS NOT CORRECT..

hope it helps

Don't anyone think that in option C, the word "they" doesn't have a clear antecedent. "They" could be referring to genes or people.

The problem comes when the pronoun "they" becomes ambiguous. Here it is clearly referring to people and not genes as per the meaning of the sentence.

Think this way:
they -> Genes -> tend to cook less, eating more processed food -> nonsensical
they -> People -> tend to cook less, eating more processed food -> makes sense

Hope it helps.

hi prashant ,
pronoun ambiguity is not the absolute rule for GMAT

GMAT will usually tolerate pronoun ambiguity if:

1)the context is obvious.
2)the pronoun is parallel.
3)the pronounis not parallel to other noun.

in this question: they ==>ambiguity is tolerable..since in option C:
the healthy genes are diminishing as more and more people adopt an urban lifestyle, in which they tend to cook less, eating more processed food and===>GENES CANT TEND TO COOK===>So it is clearly refering to people...as the context is obvious....

hope it helps

It can't be D. D seems like a run on sentence. C for me.

I don't get the meaning of this sentence, how can we compare the healthy genes with protein?

Would anybody please elaborate further?

Cheers!

A very hard question which I want to follow

in the pattern
like+noun 1+clause(noun2+verb)

the meaning is that noun 1 and noun2 do the same job (verb)

this means only C and D is correct in this point.

C is better.

the trick is that noun 1 and noun 2 look very different but they can be compared because they do the same job

like the table, a person becomes old over many year

is a correct sentence.

very hard and good question.

In option C: Word EATING is not parallel to COOK. SO It must be modifying Lifestyle and the is no other possibility.
So now the sentence means Urban Life Style is eating.

I would like to request any native english speaker in forum to suggest whether that makes any sense.
Since I am non-native english speaker, I feel such construction incorrect.
But the C is the only best answer available in the list.

What does the participial modifier, “, eating more” modify? It is thumb rule that the adverbial modifier will modify the subject of the previous clause and its action. Here the previous clause is - they tend to cook less – Therefore fore they tend to cook less (at home) but instead gulp ready to eat pre-processed or fast foods
Here, lifestyle is not part of the previous clause; hence, eating cannot modify that.

'Like a protein rich diet that the healthy genes need to produce amino acids'

What does this sentence mean?

Should not this be:
'Like a protein rich diet that the healthy genes produce amino acids' (removing need to)

Also, what are comparing here. why eating more processed food is correct?isn't it wrong parallelism?
