Stipends for PhD students in the United States is typically between $20,000 and $30,000. Students can live comfortably for that money, but not sure if it is enough for a family of three. A lot depends on what part of the US you are in. Prices in one state could be much higher or lower than other states.

Re: PhD stipend [#permalink]
It can depend on the area you go into because in my area (Information Systems), unless you get into a top school, ranges at about $18,000-$20,000 for a stipend. Big schools that might pay more than that will want a higher GMAT score. I received an offer from University of Arkansas and they let me know that my GMAT score may keep me from getting a $10k a year fellowship, which stings a bit but I won't let it deter me.

I'm going to piggyback on what jen2881 said a little bit . At a top 20 b school stipends range between 50-60k. GMAT score needed to enter is typically higher than that of an MBA program .

Btw I got the fellowship! I get $27k a year total for 4 years . I'm single so I don't really know but it can be manageable if you have 2 incomes and a family. Might be hard of just you are working. My sister in law makes $1600 a month and my brother barely brings in $1000 a month as a student and they manage.
