E

but not for the reason that food is not high tech. but for the reason that making "european style" food is not a prestige, it's merely a marketing gimmick.

E, but for yet a different reason. In this choice the food is actually made by chefs from France and Italy whereas in the sitmulus the American production of high tech equipment was only made to appear more like that produced in other countries.

In the world of high technology, America has lost the battle for international prestige.

The above last line in the stem says "In the world of high technology" and all the options except (E) talks about teachnology based products. Only option E presents a product which is not technology based. That is the only distinguishing factor I could find in doing my elimination.

I would pick (E) as my answer based on the above anaylsis and I might be wrong in my analysis and hence need expert opionion.

Would be curious to know if others have any other opinion in selecting option (E).

(E) An American maker of frozen foods advertises its dinners as “Real European-style entrees prepared by fine French and Italian chefs.”

This answer open the thought that the products (food) of US were made by foreign people, rather than American who adopt technology, innovation from others countries as 4 choices remain say.

Re: At one time, European and Japanese companies tried to [#permalink]
Nowhere in the question stem a mention of food items is present so basically option E is out of scope option
Frozen food prepared in America and portrayed as Real European-style entrees prepared by fine French and Italian chefs is not actually supporting the claim made by author but rather using their(European counterparts) popularity to sell products in America
So correct choice
option C is incorrect due to the use of phrase ' American electronics firms boast in their advertising of Japanese-style devotion to quality and reliability '. Video games use this principle by using a japanese sounding name and confusing the customer. It is sort of a weak strengthener

Conclusion : In the world of high technology, America has lost the battle for international prestige.

So, we need those strengthener that supports the above conclusion.

In D, It is clearly stated that they are studying German-made televisions in order to adopt German manufacturing techniques. Hence, possibility is high that they are going to adopt it.

In E, we are talking about food. But the conclusion is about technology. Hence, Irrelevant here. So, correct Answer is E.

At one time, European and Japanese companies tried to imitate their American rivals. Today, American appliance manufacturers import European scientists to lead their research staffs; American automakers design cars that mimic the styling of German, Italian, and French imports; and American electronics firms boast in their advertising of Japanese-style devotion to quality and reliability. In the world of high technology, America has lost the battle for international prestige.

Each of the following statements, if true, would help to support the claim above EXCEPT:

(A) An American camera company claims in its promotional literature to produce cameras as fine as the best Swiss imports.
(B) An American maker of stereo components designs its products to resemble those of a popular Japanese firm.
(C) An American manufacturer of video games uses a brand name chosen because it sounds like a Japanese word.
(D) An American maker of televisions studies German-made televisions in order to adopt German manufacturing techniques.
(E) An American maker of frozen foods advertises its dinners as Real European-style entrees prepared by fine French and Italian chefs.

Please explain your answers .................

There is not really much conflict in this thread - the majority seems to agree with the OA E. I do so as well because of two reasons already stated in this thread:

1. Frozen food is not a part of high technology industry.
2. at-one-time-european-and-japanese-companies-tried-to-64730.html#p473815

Option E is NOT about High Technology...where as all others are ...
Hence E..does NOT support the claim that In the world of high technology, America has lost the battle for international prestige...

E , the basic argument in the passage is about the Americans inability to produce indigenous things , and option e says that the product is produced by american maker but advertised in european name , which refutes the claim in the argument which potrays american as mimic.

E

European style food employed doesn't imply a lower standard for American food.
As he is just employing an European chef to prepare the specific delicacies.

E because only this is discussing about non-technological aspects. The question is related to technological aspects.
