What was the amount of money donated to a certain charity?

(1) Of the amount donated, 40 percent came from corporate donations.
(2) Of the amount donated, $1.5 million came from noncorporate donations.

1) we don't know what 40% is equal to hence we cannot deduce the total amount
2)we don't how much came from non corporate donations hence also insuff.

1+2
we know 40% from corporate donations hence 60% from non corporate donations
60% = $1.5 Million
hence we can find 100%

1+2 Sufficient

Statement 1) No actual value of money mentioned but the question asks about amount of money. Not Sufficient.
Statement 2) Though the value of money is specified, but the relationship of "noncorporate donations" with the "money donated" is not specified. So Not Sufficient.

Combining the two statements, we know $1.5 million corresponds to 60% (assuming "corporate donations" and "noncorporate donations" are mutually exclusive - Kind of open to interpretation), total money can be calculated. Hence option C)

What was the amount of money donated to a certain charity?

(1) Of the amount donated, 40 percent came from corporate donations. This implies that of the amount donated, 60 percent came from noncorporate donations. Not sufficient.

(2) Of the amount donated, $1.5 million came from noncorporate donations. Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) 0.6*{total} = $1.5 million. We can solve for {total}. Sufficient.

Answer: C.

Helpl me with one kind of confusion. It is not explicitly given that the total money donated to charity comprises of only corporate and non corporate donation. Then how can we assume that both sum up to total money.

We have to find total amount of money doanted to a charity.
1) it tells us only percent of charity came from corporate donations. So its INSUFFICIENT
2) its tells us a part of whole charity that came from non corporate donations so its INSUFFICIENT.

Combining both we come to know that 60% of donation ($1.5 million) came from non corporate donations so total amount can be calculated.

(2) Of the amount donated, $1.5 million came from noncorporate donations.

Solution:

Question Stem Analysis:

We need to determine the amount of money donated to a certain charity.

Statement One Alone:

Even though we know the percent of the total amount that came from corporate donations, we don’t know the actual amount that came from corporate donations. Therefore, we can’t determine the total amount of money donated. Statement one alone is not sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

Even though we know the amount of money that came from noncorporate donations, we don’t know what percentage of the total amount this is. Therefore, we can’t determine the total amount of money donated. Statement two alone is not sufficient.

Statements One and Two Together:

Since 40% of the donations came from corporate donations, 60% came from noncorporate donations. Since this equates to $1.5 million in donations, the total amount of donations is therefore 1.5/0.6 = $2.5 million. Both statements together are sufficient.
