My take is E. The parallelism has to be correctly applied. The whose in the initial part of the sentence refers to hedgehogs, and so the underlined sentence should be compared to hedgehogs, which is bears.

E it is.

It is comparing "true hibernators" and "bears".

D is unnecessary wordy and тАЬbearsтАЭ must be plural.

Woodchucks and hedgehogs are plural, therefore bears for maintaining subject parallelism.

Re: In contrast to true hibernators such as woodchucks and hedgehogs, whos [#permalink]
Correct option : E

Statement Exam :
1. Comparasion
In contrast to true hibernators such as
woodchucks and hedgehogs,
whose body temperatures drop close to the freezing point during the winter months,
bears maintain a nearly normal body temperature throughout their prolonged sleep.

Bears are compared with Woodchucks and Hedgehogs

2. Modifier :
whose body temperatures drop close to the freezing point during the winter months - modify Bears

(A) the body temperature of bears remains nearly normal - modifier error
(B) a nearly normal body temperature is maintained by bears - modifier error + Maintained is wrong verb tense addressed
(C) a bear's body temperature remains nearly normal - modifier error, its not Bear's Body, its the Bears + remains is wrong, it must be maintains
(D) a bear maintains a body temperature that is nearly normal - - modifier error, its not a Bear, its the Bears + usage of "THAT" at wrong location in sentence
(E) bears maintain a nearly normal body temperature - correct
