It is interesting to note how the US one year programs are generally intended for students with a BSBA or another graduate degree. Constrast this with the European/UK programs such as Cambridge where only 26% come from Business, Economics, and Management undergrad degrees combined.

Florida's One Year Option A does appear to be a US one year program that is open to all majors.

Yes, Cranfield (like the vast majority of MBA programs in the UK) is a one-year program. I did not include Cranfield since I figured that most readers were aware that it was a one-year program but I can certainly add it to the list above. I am a bit confused by the phrase "even Cranfield" but that's just me . . .

How did the one-year program emerge in Europe?

One reason for a rejection of the two-year program in Europe was the fact that the first degree in Europe tended to take longer than the four year standard of the United States. Since European students had already been in school longer than their US counterparts, it did not make as much sense to require the same number of years in graduate business study.

A second reason for rejection of the two year program was to emphasize the fact that business school was inteneded to assist in the development of managers, not to produce full-fledged managers at the end of the program. A one year program would allow students to develop valuable skillls but still make it clear that much more learning would take place in the work force.

It should be noted that many US programs were effectively one-year programs at the time that INSEAD was founded. Accordingly, the one year masters has been with us for quite a long time.

Some schools viewed the masters in business as a one year specialist degree for students who had already studied business as an undergraduate. Other schools were very generous in their waiver policy so that a student with an undegrad degree in business could cut the time to complete the grad degree down to just one year.

For instance, in the late 1950s Pierson reported that about half of the students at Indiana, Washington University, and Wharton received their MBAs within one calendar year of beginning the program. For those interested, the Carnegie report provides an fascinating summary of business school practices in the post-war era.

Another example is Dartmouth program that essentially functioned as a 3-2 program in which students finished their business studies after one additional year of graduate level work.

Since it's been a while since this was updated, the change in Ivey's program hasn't been noted. Ivey has changed from a 2 year (16 month) program to a 1 year (12 month) program, effective with it's May 2006 intake.

Excellent point regarding Ivey. I have discussed the program in some PMs but have not had the time to update this list.

UW now offers a one year Global MBA for applicants with advanced standing and international work experience. Can't comment on the quality of the program because it just started last fall.

For people who want to look beyond US and EU, Indian School of Business, Hyderabad also offers a one year MBA in tie-up with the Wharton school.

Most of the top schools mentioned here require either a undergraduate business background or an advanced degree for admission (specially in USA) . So it is important to first judge whether one is technically eligible to apply for these schools .

Seeing the above list and a little more research.. Is it that for US one year MBA programs (typically like Kellogg's) , an engineering background with decent number of work experience years is not eligible - as he is not equipped with their core courses / other undergrad business degree ?

If you’re intent on picking up your MBA in a single year, your options of attending one of the very best schools in the world narrow considerably. In the U.S., for example, only nine of the top business schools ranked by Poets&Quants offer one-year options. In Europe, where the 12-month degree is more common, there are far more opportunities to get a quickie MBA at a prestige school, from INSEAD to IE Business School in Madrid, Spain.
