What is the value of the integer x ?

(1) x rounded to the nearest hundred is 7,200.
(2) The hundreds digit of x is 2.

Statement 1- Value can be in between the values 7150- 7249
Statement 2- Clearly not sufficient as we do not even know no. of digits in the number.

When combining, the value of X can still be any no in between 7200-7249.

What is the value of the integer x ? [#permalink]
its given the integer is x

From Stmnt1-x rounded to the nearest hundred is 7,200.
this means x can lie between 7150 to 7249. Hence statement 1 alone not sufficient

From stmnt2- The hundreds digit of x is 2.
this means hundredth's place of x is 2. We do not even know how many digits x has. hence 2 statement alone not sufficient

if we combine the statements, we can only conclude that the integer lies between 7200-7249. we still do not know the final value of x

Hence final answer is E

Stat 1: We don't round the values unless we have decimal.. so here value of x here is 2..Sufficient.

Stat 2: direct information...Sufficient...

IMO option D.

Dude, x is NOT the hundred digit , rather x is a number, which when rounded to nearest hundred gives 7200.

I think you have not read the question carefully. Please go through it once again.

Hi,

Statement 1 => x rounded to the nearest hundred is 7,200. => No rounding off required => 2. SUF
The hundreds digit of x is 2. => Value is 2 . SUFF

Hence D

You are also missing something here. Please read my explanation above. Answer should not be D.

(1) \(7199, 7201, 2702\) can be too many values; Insufficient.

(2) \(200.....299 \ x\) could be any value; Insufficient.

Both.

Can be \(7201, 2202\) .... Insufficient

The answer is \(E\)

We need to determine the value of x.
Statement One Alone:

x rounded to the nearest hundred is 7,200.

Knowing that x rounded to the nearest hundred is 7,200 is not enough information to determine x. For instance, if x = 7,194, it will be rounded to 7,200, or if x = 7,211, it will be also rounded to 7,200. Statement one alone does not provide enough information to answer the question. Eliminate answer choices A and D.

Statement Two Alone:

The hundreds digit of x is 2.

There are many numbers with a hundreds digit of 2. Knowing the hundred digits alone will not allow us to determine x. Statement two alone does not provide enough information to answer the question. Eliminate answer choice B.

Statements One and Two Together:

Using our two statements together, we know that x rounded to the nearest hundred is 7,200 and the hundreds digit of x is 2. However, we still do not have enough information to answer the question. For instance, x could equal 7,201 or 7,202, giving us two different values of x.

Answer: E

Hi Jeff,
Just wanted to confirm my understanding-

Rounding off to nearest 100-
100-149 will be rounded off to 100
150-199 will be rounded off to 200

Rounding off to nearest 1000-
1000-1499 will be rounded off to 1000
1500-2000 will be rounded off to 2000

And for decimals-
0-0.49 rounded off to 0
0.5 to 0.99 rounded off to 1

Would be great if you could kindly share links to a such a thread/ quick reckoner for revision if possible.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks!
