So only 'E' left.

I think its E.

The second boldface is conclusion of the argument.

So we come down to B and E.

The first boldface supports the conclusion, so B is out.
Hence E

To be honest my first choice was 'E', but then I switched to 'A'.

Just for y information - ignore B,C,D because of against in each of these answer choices. First bold can't be against second one in this argument.
So A or E?
I'll try to elaborate 'E' for you.
The main point of the argument is to state that some fragments could not be burned up in th outer atmosphere. That's why the author gives the evidence about sulfur. The first bold tells us that fragments almost certainly contained no sulfur. So if the layer below the Jupiter's atmosphere containes sulfur it means that some fragments can penetrate through the Jup's outer atmosphere without being burned up.
Unburned fragments bring sulfur from the outer atmosphere into the lower layer.

Fragments (no sulfur) supporting judgement ---> outer atmosphere (sulfur) ---> lower layer (now with sulfur, before fragments without sulfur) ---> fragments can penetrate through the outer atmosphere conclusion.

Is it clear, please?

m8 thats a nice explanation. But I think there neds to be a clear way to get to the right answer dont you think? The OA is E and your explanation is good. I just dont want this to happen to me on D-DAY. I may choose A with a lot of confidence on this question!!!

Look why A is wrong.
Astronomers do not offer the explanation to the fragments, do frags have sulfur or they do not. They offer explanations why layers have sulfur.
But the first bold asserts that frags almost have no sulfur. It's not the explanation. It;s assertion/judgment.
Also compare 2 word pairs in 'A' and 'E' circumstances with judgement and explanation with conclusion.
In such types of CR Qs pay attention to clue words in answer choices.

Btw, what is your native language?

I too went for A.
I did not choose E only because it has the word "judgement".
But, I understand M8's explanation. And I see why A is wrong.
A says that
"First present a circumstance for which the author offers explanation and B is part of that explanation"
Author does not offer explanation for the first bold sentence. Hence, A is wrong.

Thanks m8 and chuckle:) I get this one now. My native language is not english. I too ignored E because of the word Judgement in it.

Just curious..at what level of difficulty would you rate this question? This was the very first question of practice test 1 of GMAT PREP!!! and I got it wrong.

Late but

^ E ^

The 2nd BF is the conclusion. The researches try to find what caused the traces of sulphur in the outer space of Jupiter. And 2nd BF says that the cause is the big sized fragments being able to get out of the inner cloud of Jupiter.

The 1st BF is a statement supporting the conclusion. The fragments almost certainly do not contain sulphur. So, they must have got into Jupiter's inner atmosphere and got back out.

I think this question comes under a medium question because this is the very first question you got. I feel it to be a good question.

Re: very tricky cr [#permalink]
The second part of the question is definitely a conclusion.

We can take out A,C and D.
B is out --> the first does not weigh against the conclusion

E is the best choice IMO. The first is a judgement --> fragments almost certainly contained no sulfur (almost certainly suggests its a knowledgeable guess, not something definite) and the second is the conclusion of the passage.
