Hello Guys,

We analysed the application data of GMATClub users who applied to US Bschools from 2012 to 2017. There were 45K applicants from all over the world who applied to US schools; 15K of them - or 33% - were Indians, which is considered one of the most over-represented application pools. It's a two part analysis in which in first part we analysed acceptance rates of Indian applicants by GMAT, age, industry, educational background at top 20 US MBA programs and in second part we have taken top 50 US programs The analysis also presents comparative study of acceptances rates of Indian applicants and those of applicants of other nationalities.

We hope this analysis will help Indian applicants understand in which schools they have higher chance of acceptance. Just a word of caution: While shortlisting Bschools, apart from acceptance chances, one should also look for other important aspects such as Fit, employment opportunities, etc. Any suggestions are most welcome.


Top 20 US BSchools (US News Rankings)




Main Takeaways:

  • 720 is the new 700. There appears to be no difference in chances between 680 and 700 GMAT.
  • Top 20 is futile very tough with GMAT score less than 720 (only 5% of applicants were admitted with sub-700 GMAT)
  • Interview and Admission chances have a very similar curves (Figure 1)
  • For every 20 points of GMAT that you can get above 700, you will double your chances. E.g. going from 700 to 720 will boost you from 2% to 5% and getting another 20 points, will raise your chances to 11%. At 760 (99th percentile), chances are 16%, only a 50% boost and then it seems the graph drops down to 11% due to low volume of data for candidates with GMAT 780 and higher
  • Best chances for admission are for applicants with backgrounds in Healthcare and CPG, followed by Consulting and Manufacturing
  • The worst chances are admission are for applicants from IT and Non Profit areas (big surprise!). This most likely is due to over-represented IT group and lack of non-profit spots in the class mix). Non-profit background was the least represented group.
  • Age is a crucial factor - and so work experience - in getting admit at US schools. Among all Indian applicants, those in the age range of 28-30 have highest acceptance rate of 7%. This implies that those who are applying to BSchools after spending 6-8 years in the industry after undergrad are preferred by business schools.
  • Friendliest school for Indians is - UNC Kenan-Flagler, offering admission to 14% of Indian Applicants, and providing the lowest differential between Indian and all applicants (14% vs 28%)

Top 21 - 50 US BSchools (US News Rankings)




Main Takeaways:

  • As expected, acceptance chances for Indian applicants increase when they apply to top 21-50 schools. At best one can have 32% chance of acceptance if his/her GMAT score is in the range of 740-750.
  • Post interview acceptance acceptance rates are also higher in top 21-50 schools. Irrespective of GMAT score, one can have at least 35% chance of acceptance after interview.
  • Consulting is most preferred industry (21% acceptance rate) by top 21-50 schools followed by Telecom and Finance.
  • Friendliest schools to Indian Applicants in Top 50 are Kelley and Mendoza. Very surprising outcome!
  • The only Top 50 program that provided admits with better chances to Indians was A&M Mays - 19% vs. 17% overall

Great information !!

Are there any reasons as such for the acceptance rates that vary from school to school?
Also it would be great if a similar study could be done on other schools in Europe, UK, and Asia.

I will be the first one to let the Kudos Fly.



I have one concern though.Are these acceptance rate the new one's i.e the latest ?
Has Krannert's overall Acceptance rate dropped to 13%??
How can it fall from 36% to 13% within a span of one year?

Few Shockers =>
WP Carey has NO INDIANS.
We all know -> The only reason it is boosting in the rankings is because of the FREE MBA tag.
Who wouldn't love a FREE MBA right ?
NO Fees = Greater number of Applications=Low Acceptance Rate=> Better Ranking.
In other words, they are just gaming the whole Ranking's system in place and are operating in BAD faith to say the least.

And to worsen it up -> It will keep on rising in its rankings as the inflation increases which is sick.ASU isn't IVEY.
Its a mediocre university at best.


The biggest surprise to me are UW Madison and Carlson.They only take 6% Indians which is crazy.
One of the Adcoms I met from Carlson was so excited about the Indian Pool. DISHEARTENING!!

The biggest positive out of this is BYU.
Going by the history of the school and its parent university, it is great to see them accepting everyone with open arms.

Thanks Stonecold! The acceptances rates mentioned in the analysis are of GMATClub users, not school's official figures. Moreover in this survey we have considered applicants who applied between 2012 and 2017 intakes, so these figures are average of last 5 years acceptance rates.

I would not say HBS doesn't accept Indians at all but the chances are very low due to extremely fierce competition. I know a handful of Indian GMATClub users who have been accepted to HBS but their application records did not reflect in this analysis probably because either they have not shown HBS on their profile or the profile status is not updated

Acceptance rate depends on available spots and volume of applications, which vary from school to school, so do the acceptance rates.

We are going to analyse other schools in future, European and Canadian programs specifically.

This is for people who are applying from India. As to the Indians born/raised/living in the US, it will likely be a very different situation depending on where on that spectrum you fall.

Yup... as said in the explanation, acceptance rate of Indians at HBS is not exactly 0% but it's extremely low - between 0% - 1%.
