Hi,

Please evaluate my profile. Would appreciate some advice on what range of Gmat scores will I need for NUS.

Basics:
29 year old male from India
Planning to appear for Gmat around July’18 for the program commencing in 2019

Academics:
92.5% in Tenth Grade (CBSE)
90.0% in Twelfth Grade (CBSE)
First Division in Bachelor's Honors degree in commerce from Sri Venkateswara College (University of Delhi)
Qualified as a Chartered Accountant in November 2012

Work experience:
5 years of experience post qualifying chartered accountancy:
2 years as a Senior analyst with the M&A Investment Banking team at one of the Big4 accounting firms (Front end) – Worked on several pitches and some live deals; drafted pitchbooks and IMs; built financial models; undertook company/industry research
3 years as an associate investment manager with a prominent Real Estate Fund in India (AUM $11 bn+) – Worked end-to-end on 11 deals; analysis and execution; monitoring of assigned portfolio of investments; regularly interfacing with investee management/ consultants/ lawyers/ bankers
I have received good ratings in appraisals throughout and was promoted this year.
Given nature of roles, both positions were with small teams, and thus I do not have any direct leadership experience however I have worked with other functional teams in a supervisory capacity and mentored interns/ trainees.

Prior to all this, I went through the 3.5 years of mandatory training as part of the CA coursework, and worked with the treasury team of a large Indian financing corporation for 9 months before appearing for the CA Final exams.

Hi anantap,

Your years of experience, age, and GMAT score seem well suited for the NUS MBA program and you must definitely apply. However, a lot will depend on the essays that you are putting forth. Ensure that you focus on how you progressed as a leader and the skill-set you acquired along your journey. Most importantly, however, your failed start-up venture will need to portrayed effectively and your learning from the same will need to be strongly portrayed. Needless to say, the career goals should also be in logical sync with your existing experience. In short, ensure you put in enough time and thought into your essays :)

Should you need help with the above, please do reach out to us.

Thanks :)

All the best!

Re: NUS Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello naina168

Acads- A 720+ GMAT will definitely help. Past scores are decent. So that check the Academic box.
Quality of Work- However, on the work front it would help review your profile better if you can share the nature of your career progress, achievements and business impact of your contributions. NUS is more interested in that vs your role/industry/years of ex.
Diversity- Your extracurricular activities can add a dash of diversity, provided you show a long term/serious involvement and a positive impact on your personal/professional life or on others.
Career goals- is the final and the biggest piece of the admissions puzzle. Unfortunately, nothing mentioned to give a feedback here. What are your career goals post MBA? Do they fit well with NUS? Why is an MBA an absolute necessity to reach these goals? This will be a crucial factor.
Success will depend highly on you having a spike in at least 3 out of the 4 mentioned factors.
Needless to say how well you tie it in your written application will decide the final outcome.
Should you feel the need to discuss your profile further, let me know.

Best

Hi naina168,

Thanks for writing in.

A score of 720 definitely looks promising; of course, the higher the better.
Having said the above, NUS will place value on your application as a whole. Thus, it will be important for you to put forth a set of stellar essays that are an appropriate representation of your skills, strengths, career progress, and achievements. To add to this, your career goals should be portrayed in a way that your short-term and long-term goals not only sync with each other but also appear as a logical progression of your current work experience.

Should you fell the need for a detailed discussion, please feel free to reach out to us.

Thanks.

All the best! :-)
