A 700 gmatlike question is really different from this one in all its aspects

Actual comparision is b/w D n E
D..repeats based on ..also 'were present in E makes it sound that they had united long time bak.

Not one of the best questions( will suggest rely thoroughly on gmat prep and og ) ..even i Picked first E then when checked the ans realized the mistake..
(E) were united with- passive format, someone else united them ..nopes from meaning its a past event , they united based on XXX.

Option E is wrong ,because you cannot join people with an ideal .People come together based on an idea .
D is the only option which uses on .
Yes, the question could have been framed well.

How they were united ??

A. were united by their holding
They are still not getting united or holding, incorrect tense

B. had as their uniting ideal
No two tasks are happening,incorrect tense

C. united each other with
united/ each other redundant

Best among the rest.

They were not united with a person, rather than an idea -> Out

(A) were united by their holding -- united or united with is right idiom
(B) had as their uniting ideal --ideal was not uniting , also sentence does not make sense
(C) united each other with - each other is wrong
(D) united based on
(E) were united with -ideal was not something they united with

The question is probably written incorrectly by the poster, as the source (Kaplan) can't write such grammatically poor question. Waste of 1.5 minutes
