Re: The symbol ? represents one of the following operations: addition, sub [#permalink]
Bunuel wrote:
The symbol ▽ represents one of the following operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. What is the value of 4▽3?

(1) 2▽2 = 4
(2) 2▽0 = 2

Statement (1) - 2▽2 = 4

Let's go ahead and try all the operations mentioned

1) 2 + 2 = 4 --> Sufficient
2) 2 - 2 = 0 --> Not Sufficient
3) 2 x 2 = 4 --> Sufficient
4) 2 / 2 = 1 --> Not sufficient

From the above we see that the operations of Addition and Multiplication satisfy the statement 2▽2 = 4

So, let us try it on 4▽3

1) 4 + 3 = 7
2) 4 x 3 = 12

Both give contradictory Information and are not sufficient

Negate A, D

Statement (2) - 2▽0 = 2

Let's go ahead and try all the operations mentioned

1) 2 + 0 = 2 --> Sufficient
2) 2 - 0 = 2 --> Sufficient
3) 2 x 0 = 0 --> Not Sufficient
4) 2 / 0 = Not Defined --> Not sufficient

From the above we see that the operations of Addition and Subtraction satisfy the statement 2▽0 = 2

So, let us try it on 4▽3

1) 4 + 3 = 7
2) 4 - 3 = 1

Both give contradictory Information and are not sufficient

Negate B

Both Statements together

Looking at both statements we see that we are getting a common answer when the operator is addition

4 + 3 = 7

Since we have one single common answer, and no ambiguity, Both statements together are sufficient.

Negate E
