(1) A total of 30 cups of whole wheat and white flour are needed to make 3 loaves of bread.
(2) Two more cups of whole wheat flour than white flour are needed for every loaf.

Would someone please clarify this problem for me? Thanks in advance.

A certain bread recipe calls for whole wheat flour, white flour, and oat flour in the ratio of 3 : 2 : 1, respectively. How many cups of oat flour are needed to make a loaf of bread?

Given: \(\frac{wheat}{\frac{white}{oats}}=\frac{3x}{\frac{2x}{x}}\), where \(x\) is some multiple to get 1 loaf of bread (so for 1 loaf of bread \(3x\) cups of wheat flour, \(2x\) cups of white flour and \(x\) cups of oats flour are needed). Question: \(x=?\)

(1) A total of 30 cups of whole wheat and white flour are needed to make 3 loaves of bread --> so for one loaf of bread 30/3=10 cups of wheat and white flour are needed --> \(3x+2x=10\) --> \(x=2\). Sufficient.

(2) Two more cups of whole wheat flour than white flour are needed for every loaf --> \(3x=2x+2\) --> \(x=2\). Sufficient.

Answer: D.

I couldn't get the question for a bit. But then I viewed it as a 'word problem'

A certain bread recipe calls for whole wheat flour, white flour, and oat flour in the ratio of 3 : 2 : 1, respectively. How many cups of oat flour are needed to make a loaf of bread?

(1) A total of 30 cups of whole wheat and white flour are needed to make 3 loaves of bread.

3 loaves = 15 x [(3x + 2x +x) taken 5 times]
In addition, 30 = 3x +2x(taken 3 times) We can accordingly figure the oatmeal amount

(2) Two more cups of whole wheat flour than white flour are needed for every loaf
This changes the given proportion by 2 -->3(2) - 4 -(2)1. So we get oatmeal again

Experts, please request your input if my approach was wrong.

Hi, Bunuel. I am a bit puzzled. The question stem doesn't establish any relationship between a cup and a loaf. How can we create a relationship between cups and loafs of bread?

The stem gives a ratio, and asks for a value. If a statement gives us a value (related to the ratio), then it will be sufficient.

1) Gives a value (30). Sufficient

2) Gives a value (2 more). Sufficient
