OA is D.
B,C,E is out because they violate paralell.
If we want to use 'had+p.p', this sentence needs some event, which happened after 'had+p.p event'.
So OA is D.

the first Broadway musical [noun] written[past participle] by a large group of composers and the inspiration[noun] for a plethora of similar works that crowded[past participle] Broadway for years after.
Hence it is of the form
Noun+modifier AND noun+ modifier
what does "that" refer to ? similar works ??
Experts please advice

The subject in this sentence is Meet Pauline and what follows it is a modifier .
The modifier has two clauses that have to parallel .
A is wrong as we do not have to use had as there is not timeline in the sentence
B which was is used wrongly here we do not was here here the parallelism is between two clauses not verbs so we need full clause .
C to be written is wrong as it the play had been written already , so there is no intent of action and again the use which was is wrong .
D Correct
E Again wrong for using to be written and incorrect parallelism .

In original sentence past perfect tense is incorrect as it presents a fact so it should be ideally in present tense.

A. incorrect, because of above reason
B. incorrect, Uses of which is incorrect. Also clause and phrase is not parallel out there on later half of sentence
C. incorrect, for same reason as that of B. Also to verb is not correct as there are no purpose which is being conveyed out here.
D. correct, its noun+noun modifier which correctly modified Meet Pauline. Its in parallel.
E. incorrect, phrase and clause are not parallel.

(A) that had been written by a large group of composers and - we don't need a had as there are no two events happening
(B) written by a large group of composers and which was - and which was is referring to broadway Musical but should modify Meet Pauline
(C) to be written by a large group of composers and which was - same as B
(D) written by a large group of composers and - CORRECT
(E) to have been written by a large group of composers and was

Another wonderful question on Modifiers - So, here goes!

A - Doesn't satisfy parallelism. The first part of the option starts with that but the second part doesn't.

B - The which was is inappropriate as it is modifying "musical"

C - The tense of the option (to be written) is incorrect. Also this option inappropriately uses the word "which was"

D - OA

E - Tense mismatch between the first and second part of the options.

Hope that added a different perspective to the question.

Thanks,

The producers are closing Meet Pauline, the first Broadway musical that had been written by a large group of composers and the inspiration for a plethora of similar works that crowded Broadway for years after.

(A) that had been written by a large group of composers and - Tense issue - past perfect had been written
(B) written by a large group of composers and which was - incorrect usage of which- which needs to be preceded by a comma
(C) to be written by a large group of composers and which was - incorrect usage of which- which needs to be preceded by a comma; parallelism issue
(D) written by a large group of composers and - Correct
(E) to have been written by a large group of composers and was - Run-on sentence, the part after the comma is an independent clause

Let us break the sentence in its clauses:

The producers are closing Meet Pauline,
the first Broadway musical
that had been written by a large group of composers
and

the inspiration for a plethora of similar works
that crowded Broadway for years after.

The sentence tests parallelism as below to share few details about first Broadway musical
1. It was written by a large group of composers
2. It was an inspiration for a plethora of similar works
These works crowded Broadway for many later years.

If you have doubt about usage of had been written (a past perfect tense), pay close attention to
simple past tense- crowded - in non-underlined portion and how they need to be parallel.

So now when you understand how the things are parallel, let us rewrite the sentence:
The producers are closing Meet Pauline, the first Broadway musical
written by a large group of composers and (modifier written modifying musical, and connects another noun modifier - inspiration)
the inspiration for a plethora of similar works that crowded Broadway for years after.
(that = noun modifier that modifies works)

Remember the noun modifier inspiration modifies - musical

C is incorrect since we always use -to be - for a showing a purpose and which incorrectly modifies - composers.

Does this help? Happy study prep :)

generis VeritasKarishma AjiteshArun Gladiator59 aragonn Is it apt to use AND between two modifiers: written and inspiration ?

Re: The producers are closing Meet Pauline, the first Broadway musical tha [#permalink]
I went through almost all the explanations and almost all the explanations mention problem with parallelism but there is one more thing that needs to be addressed in this sentence.

The producers are closing Meet Pauline, the first Broadway musical that had been written by a large group of composers and the inspiration for a plethora of similar works that crowded Broadway for years after.

(A) that had been written by a large group of composers and
(B) written by a large group of composers and which was
(C) to be written by a large group of composers and which was
(D) written by a large group of composers and
(E) to have been written by a large group of composers and was

The producers are closing Meet Pauline, -> The first part of the sentence is a complete independent clause.

the first Broadway musical that had been written by a large group of composers and the inspiration for a plethora of similar works that crowded Broadway for years after. -> This second part of the sentence can't be the independent clause unless there is a conjunction (and, or, but) in between the two clauses or this second part of the sentence can't be the dependent clause unless there is any subordinate conjunction, which connects two clauses.

As per the answer choices, we cannot have a full verb in the second part of the sentence because the appropriate conjunction is missing otherwise the sentence will become a run-on sentence.
Only option D works here because it does not have the conjunction and the full verb is missing while in other options full verb is present but conjunction is missing.
