ok, smallest number greater than -10 is -9....therefore it is -9 x -9= 81....so 81 it is greatest possible product of x and y...any number combination with number grater than -9 will give us in total smaller product than 81...for example -9 x -8 = 72 etc.

I have a problem with this answer. I thought x and y hare supposed to be two distinct negative integers. In this case, they should be -9 and -8. Please explain further.

Unless it is explicitly stated otherwise, different variables CAN represent the same number.

Bunnel what's the answer.. as per me as it's not explicitly stated the answer should be 81 and not 72

The greatest possible product of x and y is -9 x -9 = 81.
