Square maximizes the area for a given perimeter. Hence if the square and rectangle have the same perimeter, the area formed by the square base would be greater than the area formed by the rectangular base.

Hence combining 1 & 2, Option C must be the answer.

chetan2u or Bunuel, plz confirm if I am right.

Lokesh we are looking for CAPACITY, which is AREA of base * height..
you are right area of square is MAX for any rectangle with given perimeter..

but we do not know of height as height of square base is LESSER than the other..

example..
1) SQUARE:-
perimeter = 16
area = 4*4=16 and let height = 1
capacity = 16*1=16

2) RECTANGLE
(a)rectangle of base 7*1
perimeter = 16
area = 7*1=7 and height = 1*2=2
capacity = 7*2=14....
so Square>rectangular base

(b) but let the rectangle be of base 6*2
perimeter = 16
area = 6*2=12 and height = 1*2=2
capacity = 12*2=24....
so Square<rectangular base

different possiblities

Insuff

R1 and R2 are two rectangular tanks. Which one of them has a greater [#permalink]
I) only height given nothing about area.

II)area is given only but A1>A2 as A1 has square base square area >rectangle area could be possibility and rectangle area>square area
Check eg of chetan2u above for this

Combining both no result
Answer E

push12345 Check Expert's explanation above.

Statement 2 implies that
II)area is given only but A1 A2>A2 A1 asA1 A2 has square base square area >rectangle area.
