Hi Prashant,

Two promotions in three years suggest good career progression (unless its a done thing in your company). Do give us more details about your leadership experiences at work, because they REALLY matter in a top b-school application.

From the little description you have given, I see evidence of academic excellence, again a top criterion for admission. Fortify this with a strong GMAT score- say above 740. You may also want to look into some UK/European programs if you are aiming for shipping companies, although from what I know of the shipping industry, there aren't too many MBA level positions available.

Many US/ European/ UK b-schools have a strength in the oil and gas sector, so you will have a range of programs to select from once you have your GMAT score ready.

Name: Hitarth Parmar

Nationality - Indian.

GMAT: 710 (Q48, Q39); IR - 8; AWA - 5.0.[Recently appeared for my GMAT on 16.02.2018]

10th: 89.7%
12th: 86.2%
Graduation: B.E. Electrical with 7.64/10 CGPA.

Work Experience: 59 months [as on 24.05.2018] at a Public-sector Oil & Gas industry in India. I worked for 53 months in Operations & Maintenance department as an Officer, and was responsible for managing the Routine Maintenance Schedules, Breakdown maintenance with Root Cause Analysis and Report Generation; was responsible for a critical design change which was universalised in the company.

Recently, I have been promoted to Sr. Officer (kind of a big-deal in my organisation  ) and transferred to Projects department since 6 months and have been looking after Project Scheduling, Planning, review and approval of procedures, materials, managing and co-ordinating with other agencies (Consultant, contractor, inspection agencies).

Extra-curriculars: Have won a team event at a national level sports fest in the game of Table Tennis; was associated for 1 year with an NGO.

Post-MBA Goals:
Long term: Strategic consulting

Short term: Project/Portfolio Management

Why MBA?
I am currently looking after management of time and resources while liaising with concerned agencies. I have seen that I do have an ability to positively influence people. However, currently, my reach/authority is limited. A formal education in management would provide me quantitative and qualitative techniques, and effectively a better reach towards positively influencing people.
Leadership is latent in people, but there needs to be something to spark it and I think an education in MBA is the required ignition.

Re: Ross Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello All,
I would like to have my profile evaluated. I just took the GMAT in June and am ready to apply for business school in Fall 2019. Here is my information:
GMAT: 710 (50Q/34V/6 IR) Have not received my AWA score yet
GPA: ~ 3.37 (over a 3.5 my last year)
Degree: BA Economics, UCLA. Transfer GPA - 3.8
Experience: 2 years as an analyst at a real estate investment company(1 year at current firm). Work in both acquisitions (acquired 3 hotels for $150mm since I started) and asset management (6 of our current hotels, and 135 hotels for a third party). Had previous internship experience in PWM.
Extracurricular: Over 700 hours working as a volunteer at the local hospital, as a tutor, and as a coach for middle school children. No experience in professional leadership/managerial roles. Was a member of Ski and Snowboard team in college. Mentor a student at UCLA. High School Valedictorian.
Background: Indian (born and raised in California). 25 years old. Typical middle class story for a kid in Orange County.
What I want from business school: First, I would like to work in finance, either in real estate acquisitions, PWM, or VC/PE. I would like to gain both the professional and personal skills that business school can provide. Finally, I need a change in my life.
Letters of Rec: Plan on asking my CIO and an Associate at my current company for my two recommendations. I also have my previous employer in case. Do not have a professor at UCLA I can ask since I did not spend a lot of time in office hours.
Other: The one issue which will make things difficult is that I was accused of cheating in college. I received academic probation and I'm sure I will have to discuss what happened. I would like some feedback whether this is a automatic red flag. It was a mistake and I've grown from it, but I am sure it will leave a mark.

Thank You,
Current Student

Hi All, I am looking for a profile evaluation, below is a little bit about me. Please note that I do not plan on applying to an MBA program for a couple of years (2-3).

Background/Demographic: 22 year old male from US
GMAT: 700 (47-Q & 40-V)
Undergrad: Indiana University - Kelley School of Business. Major: Economic Consulting, GPA: 3.84
Experience: Just started working at Deloitte Consulting in project controller practice. Previously was a volunteer at the commodities futures trading commission
Extracurriculars: member of Phi Chi Theta Business Fraternity during undergrad, main community involvement has been with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Also, my main hobby is Jiu Jitsu. I have won a few local tournaments in Chicago, and help teach classes twice a week.
Other: International experience includes studying abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark
MBA goals: I aspire to start my own business, and hope that an MBA program will broaden my network as well as develop my leadership skill set.

Thanks!

Hi there, thanks for writing! I see that you've posted this in a few school threads, so you can refer to my response here for all of them.

While the academic probation isn't an AUTOMATIC red flag, it will be a cause for concern. Therefore, I suggest addressing it in the Optional Essay by taking ownership of what happened and stating what you learned from it (and how you continue to apply those learnings today).

Aside from that - 2 years of work experience (3 by Fall 2019) is a bit light, so you might consider staying at your current firm for a year to gain more responsibility and possibly a promotion. A 710 is a good score, but 720/730+ would help offset your slightly lower GPA (and for males in finance, AdComs have high standards for GMAT). Two professional recos are good, no need to get an academic one as schools discourage them.

Hope this helps a bit! If you have any other questions or want to discuss in detail, I highly recommend that you sign up for a free 30-min consultation with me here: https://www.mbamission.com/consult/?dis ... admissions

Hi there, and thanks for writing! I see you posted this in a couple of school threads, so please refer to my response here for all.

It's great that you're at Deloitte, it's an excellent company. While you're there, learn as much as you can, take on projects with increasing responsibility, and look for opportunities for firm leadership as well (recruiting, joining/leading company organizations or committees). Your GMAT score is off to a good start, but if you can push it up to a 720+ that will serve you well for the top schools. Keep up the extracurricular involvement, as it shows the AdCom your leadership and passions.

Finally, over the next couple of years, do some reflection on your post-MBA goals. Starting a business certainly may happen in the long term, but think about what you might want to do post-MBA that will help prepare you for that eventual endeavor. Also, it's never too early to start researching schools - start going to local info sessions and talking to students/alumni about their experiences. This will help you determine which programs are a good match for you and give you insights to highlight in your applications later on.

Hope this helps, and best of luck! If you want to discuss your profile further, I recommend signing up for a free consultation with me here: https://www.mbamission.com/consult/?dis ... admissions

Hi, and thanks for writing. I see you've posted the same details in several school forums so I'll just answer here.

In order to be able to evaluate your profile, I'd like to know:

- Why do you want an MBA - what's your post-MBA goal (and, what appeals to you about Ross in particular?)
- What was your GMAT raw quant score?
- How long have you been volunteering at the hospital?
- What did you major in during college?

Thanks!
Nisha

Hello,

I am just getting started on the potential MBA journey. I just graduated from undergrad and am eager for advice on what to do to better prepare myself for applications in the next few years. I am looking to see if my current profile fits in with the prospective Ross student and, if not, how to fix that. Action steps that others found to be helpful on a quality GMAT score or other useful tips would be greatly appreciated!

Profile

Background/Demographic: 22 year old white male from US
GMAT: Not yet taken officially, but believe I will be somewhere between 670-720
Undergrad: Purdue University Krannert School of Management. Major: Economics and Management, GPA: 3.55
Experience: Just started as an Analyst at a top Management Consulting Firm specializing in Antitrust and Competition. 2 internships during undergrad - one in auditing and the other in business development.
Extracurriculars: In business school's employer's forum during undergrad (helped attract top employers and planned career fairs). Social fraternity with executive positions held.
Volunteering: Teach English to non-English speaking adults. Reading buddy with a 1st grader once a week in underprivileged part of Chicago. Volunteer at animal shelters occasionally.
MBA goals: I am still figuring this out. My main reason for aspiring to obtain an MBA is the career advancement it comes with: promotions and salary (especially at my current firm, no one moves up from an analyst unless they have a graduate degree).

I appreciate any advice and direction anyone has to offer!

*Disclaimers*: I recognize that I will need more years of work experience and will need to further hone my "why"... Thanks!

Hi, and thanks for writing! Props to you for thinking ahead in your MBA journey. It looks like you're off to a good start. For now, in addition to what you have identified, I would say 1. focus on your GMAT so you can score 700+ 2. Try ti take on a leadership role within your current extracurricular involvement 3. begin your research by talking to Ross students/alumni - that way, when you apply, you can make a strong case for why the program is a good fit for you based on its culture and resources within and outside of the classroom. Hope that helps a bit!

Hi there - looks like you have strong academics and work experience, which is great. Good that you had extracurricular involvement in college - any chance that you could pick up a similar activity now? It's ok if not but if so, it could strengthen you application further.

I think the key for you will be explaining in your application the motivation behind your goals of tech consulting/PM, as well as highlighting a variety of professional and personal experiences in your essays, to provide the AdCom with a multifaceted view of you. Additionally, make sure to highlight fully your impact in your resume. If you do these things, then I think that you have a solid chance at the program. Best of luck!

Thank you so much in advance for the help!

Background: Applying in Fall 2018 Round 1 for Fall 2019 start date.
Race/nationality: White, US
Sex: Male

Undergrad school/major: University of Pittsburgh, Accounting/Finance
Undergrad GPA: 3.85

GMAT Score: 760 Total, 49Q, 44V, AWA 6, IR 8

Work experience and leadership: 3 years of work experience upon submission of applications in Fall 2018 (4 upon planned matriculation) in Big 4 Public Accounting, Audit. I have completed a rotation in the TAS practice at my firm (specifically due diligence) and will be transferring full-time next Spring (I think this is a big selling point and shows growth in my career as the rotations are very selective in my office/firm).

Community and Others:
Volunteer dog-walker at local animal rescue shelters, helping to prepare and lead a booth at the upcoming Made in America festival in Philly.
Volunteer at LLS, organized multiple charity events and an office-wide team for a stair climb event.
President of Beta Alpha Psi during undergrad.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant during undergrad
Recipient of scholarship awarded to "Top Achieving Academic Student" during undergrad.
IM Leagues

Certifications: Licensed CPA

Post-Grad Goal of MBA: To secure a position with a BB Investment Bank (specifically M&A/Core IB division), with the ultimate goal of transitioning to Corporate Development for a F100-F500 Company in consumer products. I want to consolidate companies in the industry to create a company that creates innovative products which make a difference in the day-to-day lives of consumers.

Additional: I think my WE/Demographic will lead to an uphill battle but my stats are strong and I think my extra-curriculars are solid. My recs should also be quite strong.

Hi there - I see that you posted the same on the Stern board. Much of my advice applies here as well (except of course, for Ross you'd have to make an especially strong case for why Ross - it is VERY proud of its culture and hands-on learning experiences). Best of luck!
