IMO E

1) Possible values : 2*1 (y=1), 2*6 (y=6 and 12 is a product of 4 & 3). Therefore, both odd and even values of y are possible hence insufficient.

2) Possible values : 2*1 (y=1), 2*6^2 (y=6 and 72 is a product of 8 & 9). Therefore, both odd and even values of y are possible hence insufficient.

Combining 1) and 2), possible values of y=1 & 6. Hence, insufficient. E.

Statement 1:
Example 1: 2y = 4 * 5 = 20 ------> y = 10 ----> EVEN
Example 2: 2y = 5 * 6 = 30 ------> y = 15 -----> ODD

INSUFFICIENT

Statement 2:
2y^2 = even

Example 1: 2y^2 = 1 * 2 = 2 -------> y = 1 -----> ODD
Example 2: 2y^2 = 3 * 4 = 12 ------> y = \sqrt{6} -----> Not ODD(nothing in prompt says y has to be an integer so this is ok)


1 & 2 Together:

Need to check that value for y works for each statement

Example 1:
2y = 1 * 2 = 2 -----> y = 1 ---------> ODD
2y^2 = 2 -----> 2 *1

Example 2:
2y = 3 * 4 = 12 -----> y = 6 -------> EVEN
2y^2 = 2 * 36 = 72 -----> 8 * 9

Since y can be even or odd this is INSUFFICIENT
