Don't we require an infinitive because of the subjunctive mood? If we assume this, answer C would be the correct choice.

Re: Moments after capturing the peak 362, the office-in-charge commanded [#permalink]
Commanded is a superlative mood. We need a base form of verb to fill in. Complete is correct.
ex: Army chief commanded that Arthur run around the ground.

So answer should be C.

Subjunctive mood and platoon is a collective noun and thus singular

Hello mnav,

In case of subjunctive mood we always use the plural form of a verb.
So, the answer here is C which uses appropriate verb form.

Hope it helps.

Nice and tricky question.

Two points must be considered in this question.
1 - Platoon is a collective noun, so we should use "it" rather than "they" --> B and E out
2 - "Commanded" is a trigger word for a Subjunctive Mood, like other bossy verbs: demand, suggest, recommend.
There are some rules to the subjunctive mood.
* Do not insert should or any other word that means should (such as must) into a command subjunctive --> A out
* The word that is mandatory + be verb --> D out

So, that is why C is the correct answer.

Re: Moments after capturing the peak 362, the office-in-charge commanded [#permalink]
Since it is a command subjunctive verb question. Therefore, the correct form of verb will be 1st form of verb and the plural version of the verb irrespective of the subject.
'it' refers back to platoon which is singular still the verb will be plural i.e. complete. Therefore option C
