Re: Johnson Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello All,
I would like to have my profile evaluated. I just took the GMAT in June and am ready to apply for business school in Fall 2019. Here is my information:
GMAT: 710 (50Q/34V/6 IR) Have not received my AWA score yet
GPA: ~ 3.37 (over a 3.5 my last year)
Degree: BA Economics, UCLA. Transfer GPA - 3.8
Experience: 2 years as an analyst at a real estate investment company(1 year at current firm). Work in both acquisitions (acquired 3 hotels for $150mm since I started) and asset management (6 of our current hotels, and 135 hotels for a third party). Had previous internship experience in PWM.
Extracurricular: Over 700 hours working as a volunteer at the local hospital, as a tutor, and as a coach for middle school children. No experience in professional leadership/managerial roles. Was a member of Ski and Snowboard team in college. Mentor a student at UCLA. High School Valedictorian.
Background: Indian (born and raised in California). 25 years old. Typical middle class story for a kid in Orange County.
What I want from business school: First, I would like to work in finance, either in real estate acquisitions, PWM, or VC/PE. I would like to gain both the professional and personal skills that business school can provide. Finally, I need a change in my life.
Letters of Rec: Plan on asking my CIO and an Associate at my current company for my two recommendations. I also have my previous employer in case. Do not have a professor at UCLA I can ask since I did not spend a lot of time in office hours.
Other: The one issue which will make things difficult is that I was accused of cheating in college. I received academic probation and I'm sure I will have to discuss what happened. I would like some feedback whether this is a automatic red flag. It was a mistake and I've grown from it, but I am sure it will leave a mark.

Thank You,

Re: Johnson Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello Fervids77

Johnson will evaluate your candidature holistically on the following 4 factors (You can read more here). You need to have s spike in at least 3 of these factors to stand a fighting chance.

1. Academic Potential- Past scores+GMAT. Indians are expected to score high on the GMAT, and 690 is below Johnson's average. Not a deal breaker, but you will need to then have a spike on all of the factors mentioned below. So I will highly recommend if you can re-take and take this up to 720+.
2. Quality of Work Ex- Direct involvement in business (sale) is good. Quick career progression is also good (considering you have done better than your peers as mentioned). Also showcase how have you positively impacted your business. What are your achievements? (P.S- Awards are not achievements, they are the result of your achievements) If you write your story well you could have a spike here.
3. Clarity of Goals- You have your eyes set on becoming a Product Manager. Display how an MBA and that too from Johnson is an absolute necessity to achieve this goal. What transferable skills have you gained in these 37 months to make this transition successful? Not very evident, but you could potentially get a spike here. You can take pointers on fleshing out the right reasons to do an MBA here
4. Diversity- What are your key differentiating factors and why are you a good addition to the class of Johnson? How will your peers benefit from your experience? Indians are one of the biggest pool of applicants, and you will need to show how you are unique. Work ex helps. Good Extracurricular activities also help. Not much is mentioned here. The awards in case studies could be explored if they really had an impact on you as a professional/candidate and were not way back in the past. A good extracurricular is that can show long term involvement and seriousness along with a positive impact on your life or the life of others. Info is limited to give a detailed feedback here.

All said, Acads does not have a spike. Work Ex & Goals could potentially have a spike (depends on your essays now). Diversity not sure. So either you work on highlighting your diversity factor or bump up your score to stand a good chance.
Needless to say final outcome will depend on how well you tie all of the above in your written application.

Best

Work Experience: Total 6 years of experience.
Post B.Tech: 2 years of construction project management experience in Oil & Gas sector with a public sector undertaking (GAIL India Ltd.) 2012-14
Post M.B.A: 4 year with PepsiCo so far in Future Leadership Program as follows (2014-Current):
2 years of sales & distribution experience as Area Head for the business driving large teams & responsible for delivering topline for the territory.
2 years of experience in handing eCommerce channel for PepsiCo, responsible for driving account relationships with online Groceries in India & delivering P&L objective metrics for the organization.

Working in the eCommerce role exposed me to the way digital is shaping businesses in every function. Met Indira Nooyi in India & her words of guidance to us was: Run eCommerce channel in PepsiCo like a Tech Company not like a CPG Org. Realized hands on that eComm is not just a platform for purchase but a medium now to transform GoToMarket channels (Online B2B, B2C, HoReCa) , Marketing strategies (Amazon Media Services), Communication modes (Amazon search competing with Google now) & a whole new experience to connect with consumers.

Post MBA Goals:
Short Term: Working in Strategy/Channel Development/Marketing roles in eCommerce/Tech sector, leveraging past experience in consumer goods & online channel along with driving businesses through digital integration learning at MBA

Long Term: General Manager roles in retail sector demonstrating leadership across multiple geographies & leveraging digital capabilities in driving business P&Ls and growths.

Academic:
1. Cohesive Leader Award, PepsiCo
2. Highest Growth Area Head, PepsiCo
3. Selected for ILEAP, Leadership Academy of PepsiCo Globally
4. Best Summer Project, MBA
5. Runners Up, PepsiCo Indra Nooyi Case Study, MBA
6. Runners Up, Deloitte National Case Study, MBA

Extra Curricular:
1. Placement Committee Member, MBA
2. Member, Summer Mentorship Program - Coaching students on summer internships interviews & skill sets
3. Organizer Sports News Letter - IIT Roorkee
4. Dance & Dramatics On Stage events

Queries:
I have following queries regarding the application:
1. Profile Evaluation for Johnson as a prospective applicant.
2. What are the possibilities one can explore in eCommerce space in terms of roles - Do people pursue Strategy/GoToMarket roles in tech ?
3. I wanted to write Product Manager roles in eComm but dont have a coding experience per se. How critical is that & would that impact the application ?
4. Is Indian GPA at IIT Roorkee 7.51/10 decent enough when converted to 4 scale GPA ?
5. To answer why another MBA, i really feel that my MBA 4 years back helped me gain experience in driving businesses traditionally. But in the span of 4 years, i saw quite massive drifts in the way digital is shaping businesses these days. And that's what i wish to seek ahead in my learning pursuit. (Crude form currently).

Re: Johnson Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello rakshitsharma1989

First of all, Kudos to the detailed post and questions- makes it easier to give a detailed review.
Your academic background is decent (7.5/10 is good not stellar), but your GMAT can make up for it. So if I were in your place, I would focus my effort on building a strong application at this stage.
Work ex looks good because you have been directly involved in the business side of things (not just technical) and should have good stories to showcase your real business impact and achievements. More info on this front will help (most of what you have mentioned is your role & responsibility).
Have you been involved in any Extracurricular activities post graduation? These may be good but you need to show something that has had a long term and serious involvement with a positive impact on your personal/professional life or the life of others.
Moving into Marketing or Channel development in e-commerce looks realistic and organic, though Product Management may be a challenge. What transferable skills do you have that recruiters will trust you for such a role. The school may find this a bit unrealistic and that may lead them to think lack of research (which is always a red flag). General manager in retail also makes sense.
However that brings me to most glaring question. Just like you I worked in the retail/ecom space and can tell you that most of these roles/industries do not require an MBA and even if they do, you already have one. The value/demand of an MBA in these spaces is not as high as say Strategy Consulting or Investment Banking. The growth into these roles is more organic. With your existing career path reaching this goal is very much a possibility (with some effort of course). Why is a 2nd MBA that too from Johnson an absolute necessity to reach these positions? I feel you are targeting too may to too varied roles which makes your case a bit weaker. Like you said the answer is crude and you may need to do some soul searching here. Pointers written here may help you find an answer
To conclude, acads and work ex loos good. But weakness on diversity and career goals. If you can tie these four cohesively in your written application, you stand a fighting chance.

Best

- I've met with several admissions associates at MBA fairs, had informal interviews with them, visited the school to sit in on classes, met with the "Out 4 Business" current presidents, let them know I'd want a leadership position in that group.
- I submitted round 1 application a few days ago

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks!
Brendan

I would leave that Columbia stuff off your application to Johnson

Hi,

Please evaluate my profile below!

Background and nationality: Male, White, US citizen, 27 years old.

Undergrad Information: BBA in finance from Top 30 Public University with a 3.2 GPA (I had one bad semester where I dealt with depression from the death of my best friend, dragging down my GPA. I plan to use the optional essay to explain this). Additionally, I have taken three MBA-level courses from Harvard Business School through their Core Requirements program (aka “Pre-MBA program”), which I completed with High Honors.

GMAT: 730 (Q 47, V 44, IR 6, AWA 6)

Work experience and leadership: At the time of applying, will be 5 years working as a financial analyst for major bank with one promotion to intermediate analyst. I, along with some of my colleagues, lead a team of analysts based in India, led many projects and worked on the largest project my office has ever done, and have mentored some of the associates on my team.
I have also cofounded a small company with a few colleagues that runs an online financial website and a small investment fund.

Community and others: Volunteered through Meals on Wheels for the past year, done many other volunteering activities before that, though not through one specific organization. I have mentored four undergraduate students at the University I graduated from over the past two years. I have been on the board of a local non-profit Irish Heritage organization for the past two years.

Recommenders: Both are supervisors of mine.

Post MBA goals: Wanting to switch to Investment Banking with the main goal of eventually starting my own investment fund that focuses on renewable energy and making an impact on saving the environment.

Thanks!

26, male, Indian Sikh.
Business economics graduate from Delhi University (first division). I've derived that my GPA is 3.7 (kindly correct if wrong)
GMAT: 740 (Q51, V39, IR8, AWA6)
Work experience:
Full time 2.5 years, freelance 1.5 years.

I freelanced with a production studio as a cinematographer and a video editor for 6 months. They hired me full-time and promoted me to the post of senior producer because I was good at dealing with clients. This lasted for 6 months too.
Then I left for Mumbai to assist in ads and films to learn more. I was freelancing as well. I was the assistant cinematographer in Kapil Sharma's "Firangi". Was part of many short films as well.

Then I joined my family business of medicine exports. It involved handling purchase and negotiating rates and payment terms. Soon I started travelling to Imphal to manage a pharmacy as it's conflict struck area and hiring someone local was tough.
Additionally, I became a mutual fund distributor in Jan last year. I have a sizeable AUM under me. I am also a stock trader. I still freelance as a cinematographer.

In college I used to make short films on social causes. I'd write, shoot, direct and edit myself. The topics ranged from communal differences, eve teasing to organ donation. I screened the organ donation movie in my college and about 50 viewers pledged their organs after the screening.
I also won numerous awards in -
Street theatre
Best photographer
Best cinematography
Best short film (director)

I wish to get into financial consulting post MBA.

What is the deal breaker here? I've been told that my work ex won't count since I've mostly worked for myself or my family (albeit full time).

Hello Sam4u,

Thanks for your query.

While your work experience is on the lower side, the international experience will definitely add value to your case.

We do recommend a GMAT retake and you must aim for a 30 point improvement at least; a higher GMAT score, coupled with a stellar application will give you a good chance.

All the best!
