The “aspect ratio” of a computer monitor is the ratio of the monitor’s width to its height. If a particular monitor has an aspect ratio of 16 : 9, and a perimeter of 100 inches, how many inches wide is the monitor?

(A) 18
(B) 25
(C) 32
(D) 36
(E) 64

We can create the equations:

16/9 = w/h

16h = 9w

And

2h + 2w = 100

h + w = 50

h = 50 - w

Substituting we have:

16(50 - w) = 9w

800 - 16w = 9w

800 = 25w

32 = w

Alternate Solution:

We can express the ratio of width to height as 16x : 9x. Since the perimeter of a rectangle is 2w + 2h, we can re-express the ratio 2w : 2h as 32x : 18x. Since the perimeter of the computer monitor is 100 inches, we have:

32x + 18x = 100

50x = 100

x = 2

Substituting into the ratio, we have

2w = 32x

2w = 64

w = 32
