1) Suff, as the ratio is > 1 , then it indicates that numerator is greater than denominator , hence bill for feb > bill for jan,

2) Insuff, As total is given and we cannot bifurcate the individual values of bills

Solution



To find:
    • Whether the amount of John’s heating bill for February greater than that of January

Analysing Statement 1
    • As per the information given in statement 1, the ratio of the amount of John's heating bill for February to that for January was \(\frac{26}{25}\).
      o From this we can say, \(\frac{February-Bill}{January-Bill} = \frac{26}{25} = 1 + \frac{1}{25}\) which is always >1
      o Therefore, February bill > January bill

Hence, statement 1 is sufficient to answer

Analysing Statement 2
    • As per the information given in statement 2, the sum of the amounts of John's heating bills for January and February was $183.60
      o From this, we cannot find out the bills for January and February separately

Hence, statement 2 is not sufficient to answer

Hence, the correct answer is option A.

1. Feb/Jan = 26/25. Clearly, Feb>Jan i.e. Sufficient

2. Jan + Feb = ....We cannot fetch the value of each variable. Not Sufficient.

Assume variable for easiness
Let feb bil be f and january bil be j

Q) was f>j ?

(1) The ratio of the amount of John's heating bill for February to that for January was 26/25.
we can interpret this as 26x/25x
x is the common multiplier use logic to answer now
x is gonna be same for both the values so if 25*anything will always be lesser than 26*anything
clearly sufficient

(2) The sum of the amounts of John's heating bills for January and February was $183.60.
Total doesnt help us we need splits "

Question Stem Analysis:

We need to determine whether the amount of John's heating bill in February was greater than it was in January.

Statement One Alone:

Since the ratio of the amount of John’s heating bill in February to that in January was greater than 1, the amount of John’s heating bill in February was indeed greater than it was in January. Statement one alone is sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

Knowing the total amount paid for the two months does not allow us to determine whether the amount for February was greater than that for January. Statement two alone is not sufficient.
