(1) On his fifth jump, Ken exceeded the average length of his first four jumps by 2.5 feet.
(2) Ken’s fifth jump increased the length of his average (arithmetic mean) jump from 22.5 feet to 23 feet.

To find how far Ken jumped on his fifth attempt in the state long jump finals

Statement 1

On his fifth jump, Ken exceeded the average length of his first four jumps by 2.5 feet.

We don't know anything about the average of Ken's four previous attempts

Statement 1 is insufficient

Statement 2

Ken’s fifth jump increased the length of his average (arithmetic mean) jump from 22.5 feet to 23 feet.

Ken's average for four jumps is 22.5

=> Sum of previous four jumps = 22.5 * 4 = 90

Let x be the distance Ken jumped in his fifth attempt

=> \(\frac{90 + x}{5}\) = 23

=> 90 + x = 115

=> x = 25

Statement 2 is sufficient

Hence option B
