2 questions on the essay question for 2019's intake (question below)-

Please upload 1-3 of your 'spikiest' pictures to the supplemental items section of your application and use the space below to tell us why you have chosen these particular images to illustrate your ‘spike factor’. (up to 1000 words)

1. Should the essays be strictly non-professional experiences?
2. Should you only narrate the story behind the picture and what you learnt from the experience or also tie it back to Why Rotman and discuss school values etc.?

Thank you in advance :)

1. One of my friend attended the recent MBA tour and had a one on one with the admission teams. They have conveyed that applicants have all the freedom to choose what they deem is right for their spike pictures. There is no restriction as professional/ non-professional as such. But showing a different side of you, that isn't conveyed through the resume would make more sense.

2. Not sure if tying the pictures to your MBA goals is a must to have. But if your pictures are such that you can communicate your goals through them, that should also be good. For my essay i'd picked up 3 traits/ life experiences that would help me stand out from the rest. I did not exactly connect it to my short term long term goals.

Hope this helps!

The same! A batch is normally identified on the basis of either the year they graduate or the year they join. Hence it means the same :)

Hi Ashwin,

1. IMO, you should not miss a chance to tell one professional story in the essay. Its relevant for a business school to know how you conduct yourself in a business situation.
2. Yes, most defintely. you should tell a story as vividly as you can. Mention your role, your actions (if relevant), why that situation was important, and possibly what you learned out of it/ achieved in it.
3. You can subtly tie the stories down to Rotman's values, without mentioning it explicitly. However, mentioning why Rotman will be out of context
4. B-schools care about two important attributes in every applicant: leadership skills and team skills. make sure your stories demonstrate these.

Hi,

I found the below on Rotman's website wrt minimum admission requirements for Indian candidates. Now I have a 4 year graduation degree which is not mentioned in the examples stated. I have overall CGPA of 7.12 and in the final year I have CGPA of 7.39. Not sure whether I am eligible to apply for the full time MBA course. Will help if someone can throw some light.

INDIA
Master's Minimum Admission Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree Equivalent: Completion of BOTH a Bachelor`s (three-year) degree and a Master`s OR A Bachelor`s degree requiring four years of study (e.g. BPharm, MBBS, BDS, BTech, BEng, or BArch)

Mid-B Equivalent: 1st Class or 1st Div.; 7.5/10 from Indian Institutes of Technology; 8.0/10 from other institutions

Thank you MBADecoder. I had turned my applications in yesterday and submitted 2 personal stories which had element so leadership, team work, problem solving etc. Did not tie it back to the values at school but there was subtle stuff in the essay that I'm hoping the adcom picks up.
Fingers crossed!!

For all those yet to apply, Rotman has a written essay question(10 minute time limit) hidden in the video essay component. (my question was to write an email to someone from the school-faculty or alumni requesting them t be my mentor) And then I had 2 video questions (30 sec to prep and 1.5 mins to answer)-1. What is the most difficult thing you've had to do? 2. Who is your role model and why?

Just a heads up. I was thrown off with the writen component since I wasn't expecting it. But I quickly started typing and gave a decent answer (I think)

Hi,
I am planning to apply in R1. Can other who've already submitted share their video interview experience and the questions they were asked.

Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Prasooon The online interview portion was not very stressful. Once you make an account, you'll watch a quick summary video that explains what'll happen.

First is a quick writing component - 10 minutes to answer some basic question pertaining to drafting an e-mail in a business setting. The example they give online is "Draft a follow-up e-mail to your admissions officer explaining your enthusiasm for Rotman". I think they just want to make sure that you understand what is appropriate, as opposed to making it a creative writing component.

The video interview portion (2 questions) is also very relaxed. Just be honest and coherent and you should be fine. You see the question, have a bit of prep time (maybe 20 or 30 seconds), and then you record your 30-60 second answer. I only have a sample size of 2 questions, but I suspect they're all similar, "get to know you" questions. For example:

- "What is your favourite X and why?" (e.g. book, movie, musician, role model, hobbie, etc.)
- Something situational, like "Describe a situation where you did Y? What did you learn?"
- Perhaps a classic "who would you want to have dinner with?" type of question. Just speculation.

I would recommend recording yourself answering a simple question on your phone or computer beforehand to see what you look like talking to nothing. The "hardest" part, I suppose, is getting accustomed to the set-up, rather than the questions themselves. They're not designed to trip you up at all.

TLDR: Not a big deal. Have fun with it! Hope that helped a bit :)

Good luck.
