385 million dollars = 7% of total candy sales;

\(385 = \frac{7}{100}*x\);

\(x =\frac{385*100}{7} = 5,500\).

Answer: D.

Since 385 million $ is 7% of the total candy sales, 1% is 55 million dollars.
Hence, 100% of the candy sales is 5500 million dollars(Option D)

D because if 7% is 385 then 1% is 55 and 100% will be 5500

Letting n = the total candy sales for the year, we can create a proportion:

7/385 = 100/n

7n = 385 x 100

n = 55 x 100 = 5500

Alternate Solution:

Letting n = the total candy sales for the year, we can create the following equation:

0.07n = 385

7n = 38500

n = 5500 million

Answer: D

GIVEN: 385 million dollars represents 7% of TOTAL candy sales
In other words: 7% of TOTAL candy sales = 385 million dollars
Rewrite as: (7/100)(TOTAL candy sales) = 385 million
To multiply both sides by 100/7 to get: TOTAL candy sales = (100/7)(385 million)

ASIDE: We need not perform any complex calculations here.
Notice that the answer choices are VERY spread apart. This means we can be quite AGGRESSIVE with our estimation.
100/7 ≈ 14 and 385 million is close to 400 million
In fact, let's round 100/7 all the way up to 15

We get: TOTAL candy sales ≈ (15)(400 million)
≈6,000 million dollars

Check the answer choices.....only one answer choice is close to 6,000

Answer: D

385 million dollars represent 7 percent of total candy sales for the year

Lets take total candy sales is X

Now, 385 = 7/100 * X
X = 385*100/7 = 5,500

Answer D

385 = 7
x = 100

Cross multiply it.

7x = 38500
x=38500/7
x=5500

Answer is D

To find the total candy sales for the year, we can set up a proportion using the information given.

Let's assume the total candy sales for the year are represented by 'x' million dollars.

The receipts from the sale of candy on Valentine's Day, which totaled 385 million dollars, represented 7 percent of the total candy sales for the year.

We can set up the proportion as follows:
385 / x = 7 / 100

To solve for 'x', we can cross-multiply:
385 * 100 = 7 * x

38500 = 7x

Dividing both sides by 7:
5500 = x

Therefore, the total candy sales for the year totaled 5500 million dollars, which corresponds to option (D) in the given choices.
