Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-
AbdurRakib wrote:
Like ancient Egyptian architectural materials that were recycled in the construction of ancient Greek Alexandria, so ancient Greek materials from the construction of that city were reused in subsequent centuries by Roman, Muslim, and modern builders.

(A) Like ancient Egyptian architectural materials that were recycled in the construction of

(B) Like recycling ancient Egyptian architectural materials to construct

(C) Just as ancient Egyptian architectural materials were recycled in the construction of

(D) Just as they recycled ancient Egyptian architectural materials in constructing

(E) Just like ancient Egyptian architectural materials that were recycled in constructing

Concepts tested here: Pronouns + Comparisons

• A comparison must always be made between similar elements.

A: This answer choice incorrectly compares the noun phrase "ancient Egyptian architectural materials that were recycled" to the clause "ancient Greek materials...were reused by...builders"; remember, a comparison must always be made between similar elements.

B: This answer choice incorrectly compares the verb phrase "recycling ancient Egyptian architectural materials" to the clause "ancient Greek materials...were reused by...builders"; remember, a comparison must always be made between similar elements.

C: Correct. This answer choice avoids the pronoun error seen in Option D, as it uses no pronouns. Further, Option C correctly compares the clauses "ancient Egyptian architectural materials were recycled" and "ancient Greek materials...were reused by...builders".

D: This answer choice suffers from a pronoun error, as the pronoun "they" lacks a clear and logical referent.

E: This answer choice incorrectly compares the noun phrase "ancient Egyptian architectural materials that were recycled" to the clause "ancient Greek materials...were reused by...builders"; remember, a comparison must always be made between similar elements.

Hence, C is the best answer choice.

Like vs Just as !!
Usage of like is incorrect hence a,b and e are out.
D is out because of parallelism
C is the answer

'So' in underlined part indicates that we need 'as' or 'just as'. A, B and E are out

Parallelism must be between ' ancient Greek materials from the construction of the that city were reused' and 'ancient Egyptians architectural materials were recycled'. C correctly maintains the parallelism.

In choice 'D', its not clear what 'they' is referring to.

Like ancient Egyptian architectural materials that were recycled in the construction of ancient Greek Alexandria, so ancient Greek materials from the construction of the that city were reused in subsequent centuries by Roman, Muslim, and modern builders.

Idiom is being tested here.
Most common idioms in official guide are:
1) Just as........X.........so.......Y......

2) Like X, Y

3) Unlike X, Y
4)Consider.......
5) Either..or......
6) Neither....nor..........
7) Not only........but also..........
8) Both............and............
9) More than
10) Between.........and........
11) From.............to...........

Coming back to the question:
Like ancient Egyptian architectural materials that were recycled in the construction of ancient Greek Alexandria, so ancient Greek materials from the construction of the that city were reused in subsequent centuries by Roman, Muslim, and modern builders.

1) What is being compared here?
Ancient Egyptian architectural materials (X) and ancient Greek material (Y)

X has to be parallel to Y

Correct idiom is Just as .........so........ (shows similarity)

2) Why only this idiom?
Because like is underlined and so is not (this gives us a hint).

3) Modifiers:
that were recycled should be in past tense because the non-underlined portion is also in past tense and past tense conveys the clear meaning in this sentence.

B) Like recycling ancient Egyptian architectural materials to construct - Incorrect usage of Like
C) Just as ancient Egyptian architectural materials were recycled in the construction of - Correct

Hi GMATNinja generis VeritasPrepKarishma

Is my understanding correct that usage of like + noun
is correct in (A) to show a comparison? It is - so - after the coma
that makes this choice incorrect.

I have discussed the use of like here: https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#/2016/06/like-vs-gmat/

The correct comparison would be Like A, B ...

Like ancient Egyptian architectural materials that were recycled in the construction of ancient Greek Alexandria, ancient Greek materials from ...

A - Egyptian materials
B - Greek materials

Quick Q: Whenever I see JUST AS, do I need to treat it is as LIKE (like + noun) or AS (as + clause, except its function as role play)
after identifying its use as comparison.

Just as is "to an equal degree as" or "in the same way as"
So the correct usage would be "... just as happy as ..." OR "Just as clause, so clause" OR "Just as clause, clause"

Official Explanation

Diction; Parallelism

When two situations are asserted to be similar, the proper way to express this is with the paired expressions just as . . . so . . ., not like . . . so. Moreover, the two compared situations should be expressed as clauses, not as noun phrases. us the clause ancient Egyptian architectural materials
were recycled . . . is correct, as opposed to a noun phrase like ancient Egyptian architectural materials that were recycled . . .

A Just as and a following clause with a passive verb are preferred, but instead this option has like and a following noun phrase (ancient Egyptian materials . . .). It appears, somewhat implausibly, to say that the ancient Greek materials were similar to the earlier ancient Egyptian ones in that both were used by Roman, Muslim, and modern builders.

B Just as and a following clause with a passive verb are preferred, but instead this option has like and a following noun phrase (recycling ancient Egyptian materials . . .).
It appears illogically to say that the action of recycling was similar to the ancient Greek materials in that both were reused in subsequent centuries.

C Correct. e expressions just as and so are paired to link the two clauses in parallel, and both clauses use the passive construction.

D Just as is used to connect two clauses, which is good, but the rst clause employs the active construction rather than the preferred passive, so there is a failure of parallelism. Also, it is unclear what they refers to. e sentence appears to say illogically that some unidenti ed group’s action of recycling was similar to the ancient Greek materials’ being reused.

E Just as introducing a clause with a passive verb is preferable, but this sentence uses like and a following noun phrase (ancient Egyptian materials . . .). It appears, somewhat implausibly, to say that the ancient Greek materials were similar to the earlier ancient Egyptian ones in that both were used by Roman, Muslim, and modern builders. Correct answer is C.

I'll be real this is horrible horrible English and if somebody talked like this in an interview I wouldn't invite them back. Just as X....., so ancient... makes no sense and people would look at someone weird if they talked like this. Should be "Just as X...., so were ancient" or was or something in between "so" and "ancient". I don't know why this is taught. It's horrible.

I was just going to say this... no one would ever speak or write like this in the real world. It should be removed from the question bank.

That's a little harsh. :)

Some people like to drop the so (just as X, Y). Others may choose to both drop the so and not start with just as (Y, just as X). You are free to use or not use just as, so, but the just as, so in the correct option is not incorrect.

If I have a sentence: "Just like you, I played with Tom Hanks"

here you is a noun, but after the comma we have a clause. which according to your explanation is wrong.

But it is right as we are just comparing the nouns "you" with "I"

Please explain.

The structure is:

i) Noun Phrase: ancient Egyptian architectural materials

+

ii) Dependent clause: that were recycled

Such structures (Phrase + Dependent clause) function as Phrases.
