Hi bobo16,

To start, when you take a practice CAT, if your goal is to receive a realistic score assessment, then you really have to be strict about HOW you take the CAT. The more the 'CAT-taking event' deviates from what you'll face on Test Day, the more likely the score is to be inaccurate (and in most cases, that means "inflated"). As such, you should make sure to take a NEW CAT each time, with the Essay/IR sections, away from your home, at the same time of day as your Official GMAT, etc. Retaking a CAT that you've already taken will almost certain lead to repeat questions. Seeing even a few of those repeat questions will throw off the 'realism' of the experience and your pacing, stress and energy levels will all be 'better' than they normally would be. From the data you've provided, we ultimately have to ignore your 650 and focus on the other 2 Scores that you've provided.

GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, those other 2 CAT score results show that you essentially performed the same each time (about 600 +/- a few points). While you've probably worked through lots of practice questions, you handle certain aspects of the GMAT consistently well, but you also make certain consistent mistakes.

Raising a 600 to a 720+ will likely require at least another 2-3 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. With an October 15th Test Date, you have just a little over 3 weeks of study time though - and the goal of improving that much in such a short period of time is likely too difficult to be considered realistic. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level; you might need to consider pushing back your Test Date though.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and your goals:

1) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
2) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

1. My plan is to apply for october 20
2. The goal is top american schools, I can't really say which. I have both background in real estate and NGO's.

I agree about the usual improvement schedule. But as I said I am studying for more than 2 months already, it cant be tham I'm going back. What study plan would you suggest?
How about the timing, any known cats with the option to add 50% extra time?

Thank you

Hi bobo16,

I think that it's important to define your timeline in more detail. If you don't know which specific Programs that you plan to apply to, then you don't know the exact application deadlines for those Programs. From what you describe, it sounds as if you plan to apply sometime relatively soon (in the next several months), but that specific information is remarkably important in your case - we need to know how much potential study time you have because with an October 15th Test Date you do NOT have enough time to get to your Score Goal. So to start, I suggest that you take a day or two to investigate the Schools/Programs that match your career goals/needs - so that we can define the specific deadlines that you would want to apply by. At that point, we'll know how much study time you actually have and we can discuss how best to proceed.

To clarify a prior point, it's not correct to say that your scores are "going back" - you're performing at the same general level (you handle certain aspects of the Exam consistently well, but you also make certain consistent mistakes - in simple terms, you've gotten 'stuck' at this level; a 610 and a 590 are essentially the same result). If you've developed some 'bad habits' during your prior studies, then it will take some time to fix those issues (and replace them with new 'good habits'). All of this IS doable, but you need to proper focused study and the necessary time to properly train.

Hi Rich

Thank you again for your reply. I was wrong and of coarse I meant October 21, which means that I have enough time.

From the research I did relying on candidates with profiles similar to mine, I would need a 700+ score, when 720 would be pretty much a safe zone.

I can put the effort to make it! From what I have seen I am making progress (On Magoosh at least) on the first cat I didn't even know hot to approach the DS.

My resources are: Magoosh premium, MGMAT SC, CR powersource and the Aristotle books. Would you suggest anything else?

About the extra time, would you suggest to practice with or without it?

Thank you so much

Hey bobo16,

You said you weren't able to take the 50% extra time test for your mock but that you get the extra time on the real test. That could account for at least part of why you're not improving. If GMAC gives you extended time, you need to take your practice tests as extended time tests. There should have been a code in your accommodations packet that you can put into your GMATPrep account to enable extended time on your GMATPrep exams. Additionally, many third party CATs (including Veritas's) do allow you to use extended time. Try taking a test with extended time and see how it goes. Chances are that with some of the time pressure off you'll do a bit better and it's important to practice with the 1.5 time since it's a really long time to sit for a test and it helps to have the practice of just sitting for that long.

Hi bobo16,

An October 21st Test Date adds just 6 days to your potential study time, but you likely need an addition 1-2 MONTHS to properly train to hit your Score Goal. To properly train for your specific Test Day "event", you should take a new, FULL-LENGTH CAT each time and take it in a realistic fashion (take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, take it away from your home, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, etc.). In your case, that would also entail taking the CAT at '1.5 time'; many brands of practice CATs allow for this option.

I noted this in a prior post, but it bears repeating: I strongly suggest that you take a day or two to investigate the Schools/Programs that match your career goals/needs - so that we can define the specific application deadlines that you would want to apply by.

Hi bobo16,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. At this point, we know that you are currently scoring at a 590/610 level when taking the GMAT under regular timing conditions. Thus, as already has been said, you likely will need more than just 3.5 weeks to achieve your 720 score goal. That being said, to get a more accurate baseline score, it would be helpful to see how you score when given 50% extra time. So, did you receive a code in your approval letter that allows you to take your practice GMAT with 50% more time? If so, the first thing you should do is take a fresh exam under realistic timing conditions.

Once you take that exam, report back here, and I can provide some further advice.

Also, you may find it helpful to read this article about how to score a 700+ on the GMAT.

Dear Scott,

And all the helpers,

I just did a Kaplan CAT with 50% additional time, and recieved 700 (46q 40v) The quant disapointed me, but I was happy with the verbal.

How accurate is the Kaplan CAT?

Thank you!

Hi bobo16,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. The most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC, but the CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide you with a relatively realistic score assessment (assuming that you use the CAT correctly).

The broader question is how realistically you took this CAT, meaning "how well did it match up to what you will face when you take the Official GMAT?" (re: did you take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, did you take it away from your home, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, etc.). The more your testing 'parameters' differ from the Test Day parameters that you will face, the more your CAT Scores can be off (and that usually means "inflated").

Dear friends and forum helpers,

I am happy to tell you that on the 22 of October I had my test, and received 710 (45 Q 41 V 6 IR 5 AWA) .

Although I am happy with the mark, I am very disappointed with the quant score which is the lowest I had since the one mock I mentioned at the beginning.

I am planing to apply for b-schools for 2020 or 2021. My profile is the following:

I am a 28 male from Israel, I worked as a PMO for the largest construction company in Israel for 18 months and then opened my own business , a school for the elderly (we teach the use of smartphones and computers ). I served for 3 years in the Israeli Military in an elite intelligence unit. I also work part time as a research assistant at my undergrad faculty for a professor of finance.
My soft spot is my gpa 82/100 Economics graduate from the number 1 ranked school in Israel. My gpa is calculated as 2.7 which considered low for an MBA application, although it is top 50% of the class.

I would like to apply to schools such as: Cornell, Oxford, Tepper and maybe NYU.

Would you suggest retaking the exam?

Hi, you can do it definitely.
I also went through the same phase.
You need a good strategy. I personally took some mentorship from experts so I can share it with you.

First of all, you need to know the divide between the sections to get 720.
Are you more comfortable with Quant or Verbal.
720 usually for Quant-intrinsic people means Q51 and Q36 +
You can use E-gmat planner(free) to know this.

Now that you know what you need.
If you don't get 720, will you take Gmat again or you'd be happy with 680+? This is a really important part.
If you won't be happy, then don't rush.

I also tried to rush and gave myself only 1 month to go from Q46 to Q51 and then realised I need more time.

For Quant, I took TTP's trial for 5 days(for just 1$) and immediately I thought I can improve my quant using this course because they have bifurcations on levels(Easy/Hard/Medium) and topics(So you only work on your weak topics).
I'd suggest you to use TTP for Quant so that you can work only on your weak areas and not waste time, and e-gmat Scholaranium for Verbal practice.

Since we're floating in the same boat, you can PM me and we can share our strategies in detail.
All the best.
