Re: By stealing atomic bomb secrets the Rosenbergs readily demonstrated th [#permalink]
By stealing atomic bomb secrets the Rosenbergs readily demonstrated their desire to be in sympathy with the communist regime.

(A) to be in sympathy with

(B) to sympathize with

(C) for sympathizing with

(D) that they should, sympathize with

(E) that they should have sympathy for

Seems like subjunctive sentence error between D&E, D seems to be right.

Re: By stealing atomic bomb secrets the Rosenbergs readily demonstrated th [#permalink]
For me, this boils down to B & C

Their desire to sympathize vs for sympathizing...

I would go for "desire to"

to be in Sympathy is correct, I think A should be the answer. In this context it means Rosenbergs is in harmony or concur with Communists.

I may be wrong, not an expert.

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

The correct idiomatic expression is not ‘desire for plus gerund’. The correct expression is ‘desire to do something’. Eliminate C. Among the other options, B is shortest and simplest. Choice B is the correct answer.
