Can you explain the below :

9) The villagers leave their homes at the stroke of dawn to hike six miles up steep, dangerous trails to the forests, to be returning by late afternoon with huge loads of firewood on their backs.

(A) forests, to be returning by late afternoon
(B) forests, and it is late afternoon by the time that they return
(C) forests; they return late by afternoon
(D) forests and return by late afternoon
(E) forests, to have returned by late afternoon

Can you explain the meaning of this sentence, is returning correct in option "D",
Why is "E" incorrect, it seems the intended meaning is that the route is dangerous at the time of returning, or I misunderstood ?

10) The Contemporary Art Society is an organization that provides information and guidance for all lovers of contemporary art and giving them discounts on artefacts.

(A) provides information and guidance for all lovers of contemporary art and
giving them discounts on artefacts.
(B) provides information, guidance, and the getting of discounts on artefacts for
all lovers of contemporary art
(C) not only provides information and guidance to all lovers of contemporary art
but also gives them discounts on artefacts.
(D) has not only been providing information and guidance to all lovers of
contemporary art but giving them discounts on artefacts as well.
(E) not only provides information and guidance to all lovers of contemporary art
but also gives them discounted artefacts.

arent both "C" and "E" the same, both are parallel "provides X and Y" Gives "X" or is it because of the preposition, "to all Lovers" and "discounts on"

I dont think discount being adjective in E is a problem.
Thanks

surbhi1991 Since the sentence is in past tense, "she set" agrees just fine. The past tense of "set" is just "set," regardless of the subject.

kanthaliya Since we are dealing with two different fields (accounting and cost-management), we need the plural "fields," just as we need "are examples."

They can be, but that is not how they are used. They are two examples, so there must be shortages in both fields. There's no indication that all of finance is experiencing a staffing shortage. This would need to be stated directly.
