My GMAT practice test score fell from 690 to 500 [#permalink] New post   14 Dec 2018, 22:34
Hi Everyone,

I'm planning to take the real test on February 1st. I've mostly been focusing on lessons (both math and verbal) using Magoosh but I did take one mock test (GMAT Prep) on November 6th, on which I scored 690. However, when I took a Magoosh practice test this morning, I scored a measly 500 :(

This means that I was either extremely lucky on the first test or extremely unlucky on today's test - probably both. I'm aiming for a 730 on the real thing and honestly quite worried at this point after seeing the 500. Is there any chance I can make it?

Hi RishiVishwasrao,

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)? When you scored 690, had you taken that CAT before (or seen any of the questions before - in a practice set or forum?)?

Goals:
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
5) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi RishiVishwasrao,

When you take practice tests from companies other than GMAC, you may find some variation in algorithms used and thus variations in your score. That being said, since you saw a 190 point difference between the two exams, can you take another official MBA.com exam to see how you score? That way we can better determine which score (500 or 690) is most representative of your ability level.

Once you complete the exam, report back here, and I can provide further advice.

Hi, RishiVishwasrao

Sorry to hear that you are struggling with huge discrepancy of score. I recommend you to take free resources of Mock Test that are available in GMAT Club and Test Preps. You can also take Math Revolution's Diagnostic Test that gives you detailed assessments of your current skill level. You can take it for free if you sign up.

This huge fluctuation can also mean that you need to establish solid bases of quant or verbal. As for Quant, ‘MATH REVIEW’ course could be useful, on which you can learn the basics(arithmetic, algebra, geometry and word problem). This is ideal for GMAT takers who want to learn very basic math or sharpen basic math concepts. Always refer back to this whenever you need to refresh the concepts. Also, focus on 5 key topics (Integer, Statistics, Inequality, Probability, and Absolute Value) that account for 80% of the GMAT exam.
