Re: A certain state has a sales tax of 5 percent on the portion of [#permalink]
Price paid after tax= 830$,
Amount that is exempted from sales tax is 200$,
Therefore, amount with tax included = 630$,
\(\frac{630*100}{150}\) = 600,
therefore, the price of the commodity without sales tax included is $600+$200 = $800,
Which is option D.

Therefore, the OA is option D.

Sales tax of 5 percent [purchase price >$200]

The customer paid $830 on a laptop, including tax: $200 + $ 630 (Taxed amount)

=> Original amount * \(\frac{105 }{ 100}\) = 630

=> Original amount: \(\frac{(630 * 100) }{ 105}\) = 600

Purchase price: 200 + 600 = 800

A certain state has a sales tax of 5 percent on the portion of a purchase price that is greater than $200. If a customer paid $830 on a laptop, including tax, what was the purchase price of the laptop?

(A) $720

(B) $750

(C) $780

(D) $800

(E) $810

The customer needs to pay tax for $830-$200=$630

Price without tax \(=\frac{100}{105}*630=600\)

Total Price before tax =600+200=$800

The answer is D
