Re: Though Frank Lloyd Wright is best remembered today because of bold des [#permalink]
This is one of practice SC questions and I clearly remember that the correct answer is B. here is the explanation on why D is not correct

• (D) This choice does not correct "because of." Moreover, the relative
pronoun “that” lacks a clear antecedent. It would be correct to say "The
design for the house, like that for the factory, is beautiful," for example.
But such a parallel structure does not exist in this sentence. However, the
use of "such as" in place of "like" is correct.

As the others did, I restricted my options to B and D.
I hurried and chose D, but I think that there is an interesting shade of meaning here.
You are remembered "for" something that you did, not "because of something"
In this case, the FL is remembered for the designs that he did in life, and not "because" of them.

I do not know if it is clear; I'm reading it again now and it looks so clear that I'm feeling like an idiot.

A. because of bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum
B. for bold designs such as the one for the Guggenheim Museum
C. because of bold designs such as the Guggenheim Museum
D. because of bold designs such as that for the Guggenheim Museum
E. for bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum's

I have a few questions here:

For B) is one not considered a pronoun? If so, doesn't it need a logical antecedent? What would be the antecedent in this case?

In C) is the use of such as to give an example of a bold design incorrect? Is the Guggenheim not an example of a bold design?

I can answer only to the second one.
In C such as is used to present and examples of designs. The GM is a Museum, so this exemplifies the museum itself, not its design; for this reason the correct construction is B
"for bold designs such as the design for the GM"
You can substitute one with design and it still makes sense, even it is repetitive

shahidomer77 option E uses like to introduce the example "Guggenheim Museum's [design].

We use such as to introduce examples.

Hope that helps.

duanlian1989 , are you quoting Manhattan GMAT? I assume so. I'm just making sure.

And is it Manhattan GMAT, or Manhattan Review?

I think not.
it is a noun. there is 'the' before 'one' which clears it is a noun.

One is a pronoun. It indicates a single, indefinite part of a set such as "bold designs by F.L. Wright."

Think of one as an indefinite copy.

After Blake saw how much his friends enjoyed their electric cars, he wanted one.

I am not convinced with your example.

in your example, before 'that', there are 2 nouns 'design' and 'house'. so it may be not clear.
but in our case in 'D', before 'that', there is only one noun which is 'designs'.

I chose B. But I am trying to discuss the concepts behind our choices.

Please see my post.

No. There is only a single example -- one example -- of Wright's bold designs at the singular Guggenheim Museum.

One stands for a single, indefinite copy of a larger collection.

Correct: I see that you received a box of chocolates. May I have one?

Correct: I don't like xenophobic statements, such as the one in which a politician called people from Mexico "criminals."

Anyone who is confused in options B and D, in the context of pronouns should note that 'that' in option D is a definite pronoun, it refers to designs and therefore a plural form is expected. On the other hand, 'one' in option B is an indefinite pronoun. Indefinite pronouns don't refer to a person or a thing.

Though Frank Lloyd Wright is best remembered today because of bold des [#permalink]
OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The original sentence contains several errors. First, the phrase “remembered.” Second, "like" is incorrect because the Guggenheim is a specific example and the use of "such as" would be more appropriate to introduce examples. Third, the sentence incorrectly suggests that "the Guggenheim Museum" is a "design." More properly, the sentence should discuss the design "for" the museum.
(A) This choice is incorrect as it repeats the original sentence.
(B) CORRECT. "Because of" is replaced by "for." "Like" is replaced by "such as." And the use of "the one for" makes clear that the design is for the museum and is not the museum itself.
(C) This choice does not correct "because of." Moreover, it incorrectly implies that the museum itself is a design. However, the use of "such as" in place of "like" is correct. However, the use of "such as" in place of "like" is correct.
(E) This choice does not correct "like." Moreover, the possessive construction "Guggenheim Museum's" is awkward and unidiomatic. However, the use of "for" rather than "because of" is correct.

I think "like" in choice e is correct
but because "designS", PLURAL, happen before possessive, the meaning is Museum has many designs. this is nonsensical

Re: Though Frank Lloyd Wright is best remembered today because of bold des [#permalink]
Can someone please confirm whether I can eliminate D because it uses 'that' and not 'those'? My understanding is that in comparisons a new copy should have the same number. Therefore, the option should have either used 'those' or should have repeated the word 'design'.
Any kind of help is appreciated.

Because of is the wrong idiom to use in this sentence, so eliminate options with Because of
A. because of bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum
C. because of bold designs such as the Guggenheim Museum
D. because of bold designs such as that for the Guggenheim Museum

E has wrong usage of Like so eliminate E
E. for bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum's[/quote]

Even though it may not 'sound right' B is the best option here that is grammatically correct
B. for bold designs such as the one for the Guggenheim Museum
