Valid problem! The denominator is always the base. What is the base? The one which comes after "than". You re comparing X with the BASE.
"More than Y"/"Less than Y" etc. So Y is the base.

"State A is approximately what percent greater than the number in State D?"

D comes after "than". So base is D. So D goes in the denominator. It will be (A - D)/D

Students in A = 181
Students in D = 79
Difference between A and D = 181 - 79 = 102

Required percentage = Difference between A and D / D \(= \frac{102}{79} * 100\)

Approximately \(= \frac{100}{80}* 100 = 125%\). Answer D...

now suppose D will be increased 100% or just doubled
the value we get = 79+79 = 158 ~ 160

but still A is ahead by 181-160 = 21 or ~20 units

thus 20 is again what % of 79 or ~ 80
let it be x%
then x% of 80 =20
or 80x/100=20
x=25 %

thus total increase = 100 (earlier shown) + 25% (calculated x)
=125%

State A - 181,000
State D - 79,000
A is what % greater than D approximately?

Let's round up D = 80,000
100% increase => D = 160,000
=> A,B,C can be safely eliminated.

150% increase => D = 200,000 <--- Already too big
=> E can safely be eliminated.

D is the answer i.e. approximately 125% increase.

Approximate.
The number of home schooled children in A is 180 and that in D is 80.
We need to find by what percentage is A greater than D. A is 100 greater than D. If A were 80 greater than D, it would be 100% greater. If A were 80 + 40 = 120 greater than D, it would be 150% greater. It is right in the middle of the two - i.e. it is 100 greater hence it is 125% greater than D.

Answer (D)

According to the table,
\(A = 181\)
\(D =79\)

Difference of \(A\) and \(D\) will give how much is \(A\) greater than \(D\).
Therefore, \(A - D = 181- 79 = 102\)

Required percent = (Difference of \(A\) and \(D\) \(/\) \(D) * 100= \frac{102}{79}\) * 100

As the question is asking the approximate value, we can approximate the above fraction

Therefore; \(\frac{102}{79}*100 =\) (Approximately) \(= \frac{100}{80} * 100 = 125\)%

We can set up the following expression:

(181,000 - 79,000)/79,000 x 100

Estimating, we have:

(180,000 - 80,000)/80,000 x 100

100,000/80,000 x 100

10/8 x 100 = 5/4 x 100 = 125%

Answer: D

Here's my solution:

State A: X
State D: Y
Percentage: P

X= Y + Y*P/100

Since the question is asking for approximate no- X and Y values rounded to the nearest integer.

180=80+80*P/100
100=80*P/100
100*5/4=P
125=P

Correct answer- D

I believe the correct answer option provided is flawed. Shouldn't the correct answer be A, 25%, as the question is what % greater the number of students in State A is compared to State B, rather than what % the number of students in state A is of State B? If the answer is 125% the number of students in State A would have to be at least twice as large as in State B right?

Hi HisHo,

Since we need to determine “percent greater,” we need the percent change to be positive, right? So, another way to set up the percent change formula is:

(larger value - smaller value)/(smaller value) x 100

In these kinds of problems I don't really want to get too hanged up on calculations.

So, what I did was I calculated what \(2 * 79\) is to find whether \(181\) is at least 2 times that result, hence if it is more than 100% of the original number.

\(2*79=158\), so answer choices A, B and C are instantly eliminated.

Then, I had to pick whether the increase was 125% or 155%. I thought to myself "What is HALF (or 50%) of 79?". The answer is ~39, which means that \(158+39\) is greater than our target number of 181.

Hence, correct choice is D.

Hope I helped offering a slightly different and IMO faster approach. :)

To Solve quickly

A= 181 and D = 79 ( both in thousands so we are ignoring that for quick cal Purpose)

We can take A as apx 180 and D as 80 ( Q has asked for apx value)

Now How much A is greater than D in Percent

A-D =180-80= 100 = We can write 100 as 80+20= 100%+25% ( Because 80=100% ( value of D) AND 20 is 1/4 of 80 .Therefore 25%)

Ans is 125% option D

Round off: 181 => 180; 79 => 80

(180 - 80)/80 = 100/80 = 5/4 = 125%

Hi, shouldn't it be 25% *greater than* D
For instance, 50 is 25 "greater than" 25.
But 50 is 200% *of* 25.
Can you please help me with this

A is what percent greater than D. [Don't be confused considering A is what percent of D]

A is 180 Approximately

B is 80 Approximately

A is \((180-80)=100\)

The percentage \(=\frac{100}{80}*100=125\)%

The answer is \(D\)
