Re: Stanford Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi everyone,

Looking forward to reading your thoughts!

Applying to:
• Harvard | Stanford GSB | Wharton

Profile:
• 24 year old Indian male.
• Top Engineering college (and consistently top 10 globally in overall rankings) in the UK (integrated masters: Bachelors + Masters in 4 years. This is common in the UK). Masters in Economics & Finance at Oxford/Cambridge.
• Top 20% of my class at Engineering school (First Class Honours - equivalent to 3.8+ GPA)
• GMAT 750 (Q50V41)
• Summer internships: 1 in the technology division of an American bank; 1 on the the trading floor of a bulge bracket investment bank. Both in London.
• Will be joining Bain London office as a pre-MBA hire. (SO WILL APPLY TO HSW IN 2-3 YEARS)

Extracurriculars:
• Took a year off before starting work at Bain London to go climb some of the highest mountains across the Himalayas and Andes (not trekking - actual climbing from bottom to the top). Here, I climbed with and met strangers from all over the world (America, Canada, Nepal, UK, Argentina, Brazil). I was trained by the Indian Army Mountaineering team for a month long course at Asia's #1 mountaineering institute where I received an 'A' grade (top of my class). Also, one of the youngest Indian's to climb the highest mountain outside Asia and was selected as the youngest member of a joint Indian-Canadian expedition to Mt. Everest until I got injured during training prior to the climb and had to pull out.

• Recently co-founded a social venture which provides a platform to pair students looking for help with jobs/college admissions with mentors in universities/jobs they want in exchange for donations to charity. Have raised $20,000 for mental health & education charities.

• Additionally, I mentored 15+ URM college applicants from Europe, India, & the US for undergraduate college admissions & internships in finance/consulting. Over 90% of them received offers to top 5 UK universities, & their top-choice internships.

• Board member (youngest) of a non-profit that offers free STEM education to 100,000+ young people that were denied access to education due to war, poverty, disability or gender.

Awards & Honours:
• Won 3-4 "Young leader" type awards. One of them was for being in the top 100 future leaders from British universities (100 out of 1000+ nominations UK wide); Another was Top 100 future UK leaders out of 7000+ nominations from over 150 UK colleges.

Post-MBA goal: Return to Bain for 2 years then move into VC analysing investments in the EdTech space in India.

Other factors: I've applied twice for the 2+2/Stanford Deferred programs unsuccessfully (no interviews). Once in my final year of undergrad, once right after that during my 1-year masters. Will this go against me in 2-3 years when I apply as a regular applicant?

Thank you for your time. :)

Re: Stanford Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
I wish to apply for the Stanford-Dhirubhau Ambani Fellowship for MBA. I haven't attempted GMAT yet and I'm aiming for a shot at it by August 2019.

Profile:
Indian Female, 22

Academic Background:
Class 10- 10 CGPA (~95%)
Class 12- 92%
Bachelor of Science (Honours) Botany- 8.811 CGPA (on a scale of 10), Ramjas College, University of Delhi
Master of Science in Biotechnology (Currently pursuing; to graduate in May 2020)- 9 CGPA (First Year) (on a scale of 9), South Asian University (set up by SAARC)

Extracurriculars:
I've been an active participant in debates, drawing and painting competitions, essay writing competitions and MUNs at school and college level. I've won several competitions at both school, college and district levels.
I've good ranks and consistently scored First Division in various national Olympiads.
I've actively taken part in sports at both school and college level and won several team sports events, namely Volleyball, Cricket and Table Tennis.
I've been a winner at the MP National Science Congress.
I had been a member of the Literary Society of my college.
I've also actively contributed towards the designing of the logo of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, South Asian University and have volunteered in the Designing Team for the Abstracts Book for the South Asian Biotechnology Conference, 2019.
Some of the awards I've received are:
-Best Student Award, Ramjas College, University of Delhi
-Batch Topper, Botany, Ramjas College, University of Delhi
-Winner, MP National Science Congress, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
-State Topper, National Science Olympiad

Apart from this, I've contributed articles for various magazines such as the college hostel magazine, Chadamama, Berlin ArtParasites and The Scribbled Stories. I've also exhibited my artworks at the college's cultural fest and also curated the art exhibition.

Work Experience: None

Career Goals:
I'm looking forward to a career in advertising and marketing post MBA.
I also look forward to investing the knowledge, experience and networking I gain from my MBA degree in trying to bring about reforms in public education in my country. Public schools in India are sadly not able to deliver what is expected out of them. I firmly believe we not only need efficient educators and enthusiastic people on boards, we also need managers. We need people with a vision, with tremendous leadership skills who are able to deliver, to steer the ship of public education towards the land it has been seeking since a long time. And I want to be a part of that change, a part of the revolution I dream of in the public education system. I acknowledge the fact that I've been privileged enough to receive education from the top colleges of the country and I wish to give back to the society with my MBA degree by contributing towards the improvement of the education sector.

I'd be grateful if you evaluate my profile and leave a comment. Thank you!

Hi! What’re my chances for Stanford, Harvard or MIT?

Hi there,

Could you help me evaluate whether I should retake a 710 GMAT, and also my chances for the top schools / schools on my list?

Thank you!

Work exp: 3.5 years at finance/tech company, ended up doing business development work, promoted twice and making $140K/year by end. Took new job / large pay cut to work for 1.5 years (by time of application) at a nonprofit startup that does civic engagement work. The nonprofit has some solid branding (funded by some top Silicon Valley founders / closely affiliated with a top 5 US university) but is pretty small and new.

Extracurriculars: Primarily tutoring/mentor ship, civic engagement (local political club). Spent 6 months in DC on work rotation doing government relations work.

Undergrad major school: top 3 US undergrad (HPYS)

Asian Female

Gmat score + breakdown: 44V (98%), 44Q (50%). 710 total.

Undergrad GPA: 3.4

In short- my scores are not good, but I have generally performed strongly in the workplace and feel I could get strong rec letters proving my out-of-classroom skills.

Goal of MBA: Network, and a clear goal to start my own civic service-oriented company / nonprofit one day. As far as immediately out of MBA- would like to explore other options for social impact work (potentially civic tech), but the exact form is TBD.

Target schools (evolving list): Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Yale, Chicago, Berkeley

Thanks for reaching out,

Whilst your GMAT score doesn't quite reach the average for Harvard, Stanford and MIT, but it is possible that with the other aspects of your application, you may still have a chance. You would have to have exceptional essays, recommendations, resume and interviews.

For a more accurate evaulation you can also checkout our free MBA chances estimation calculator. We also have other great free admission tools on our website https://aringo.com/. I highly suggest that you check them out.

Here at ARINGO, we specialize in MBA applicants with GMAT scores of 720 and lower. In the past, we have had clients with GMAT scores around the 600 mark get accepted to these three schools.

Thanks for reaching out,

It is difficult to evaluate your profile without a GMAT score. However, if you are set on Stanford, the average GMAT for their MBA program is usually around 740. Other schools with fantastic finance options are Harvard, Chicago Booth and Wharton. All whose average GMAT scores are around 10 points lower than Stanford's. However, in the past we have helped applicants with GMAT scores of 620 get into Stanford, so GMAT score is not the most important if the rest of your application is outstanding.

If it is the media field that you are interested in, I would highly suggest applying to NYU Stern. Stern offers an MBA specialization in Entertainment, Media and Technology.

Your work experience is impressive and will definitely help enhance your application.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions,

ugasra I'm very optimistic!! interesting stuff, relatively underrepresented, I have a client from Paraguay at GSB right now with good but less impressive credentials. Do you have an interesting story for the main essay? If you are female even better. From what I see so far, go for it.

23 years old Black African Immigrant, Army Reserves Serviceman (Transportation Corps)
College: Small, private engineering college; Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
GPA: 3.6 (Major GPA 3.8) | College years: Aug 2013- Dec 2017
Major and Minor: Computational Mathematics Major, Aerospace Engineering minor

GMAT: 760

Pertinent Info:

Enlisted in Military Accessions Vital to National Interests (MAVNI) Program for international students. Ship date was delayed 1 week before I was supposed to ship due to Secretary of Defense concerns about the program, and GPA suffered the following semester (penultimate semester ) due to anxiety and other challenges as a result of the sudden delay (lowest only time ever below a 3.2), recovered with a 4.0 in final semester with 21 credits.

Job Experience/Internships:

1) Co-Founded an IT solutions company in home country

2) Interned in Propulsion engineering group of Delta Air Lines (1 year co-op) (Delta for 4 months, school for 4 months on and off between Aug 2015 and April 2017).

3) Interned in Technology Division (Trade Processing) at Goldman Sachs in NY (3 mos): May-Aug 2017

4) 1 year in Securities Division Engineering (Listed Derivates) at Goldman Sachs in NY: April 2018 - May 2019

5) Currently Quantitative Analyst at Fin-tech startup in NY (portfolio and risk optimization for banks and institutional investors)

Why MBA?

I want to start a fin-tech company in my home country, a country plagued with many grassroots issues. I really want to be successful, so I want to learn as much as I can, and gain the skills and credibility I need to succeed from B-School. I also love that I'll be able to leverage an extensive alumni network

Leadership/Research/Awards

1) Research Assistant - Conducted research on mathematical models and how they are taught to new engineering students

2) Founded local chapter of Engineers Without Borders, served as president raised over $30,000 in funding

3) Student Tutor

4) Served in Student Government as a Representative for the College of Engineering and other roles.

5) Worked on various projects and held other leadership roles on campus

6) Lots of awards including Army Certificate of Achievement for Distinguished Leadership (only one per platoon training class of 30-60 people), American Institute of Aeronautics and Aerospace (AIAA) Iridium Scholar

7) Ranked top 25% of analysts in GS analyst class (End of Year Review - Ranking is graded Q1 (top 25%), Q2...Q4)

Positioning

Initially started off studying aerospace engineering as I loved planes and this guided my college choice. I realized even though I love planes, I also love fin-tech and the impact in can especially in my home country, this is what guided my pivot to change majors/career path.

Target Schools: Stanford (Hennessy-Knight Scholar), Harvard HBS - SEAS ( Dual MBA/MS), UChicago Booth, Columbia

Plan to apply in about a year.

Just took my GMAT today and considering if I should retake given I'm targeting GSB/HBS. I know it's on the border of even having a shot but I'm hoping that with strong resume/recs I'll still have a decent shot. Additionally, most of my firm went to either GSB/HBS and I'm fortunate enough to be able to get some pretty stellar recs from well known alumni of both schools (trustee/advisor board members). Am I dreaming or should I retake and target a 740+?

Background and nationality: Asian-American

Undergrad Information: NYU/3.8 (Cum Laude)

GMAT: 700 (Q44/V42)

Work experience and leadership:
- Vice President at well-known venture capital firm; promoted early from associate to senior associate then to VP
- Have led a few of my own investments that have done well and take board seats on companies
- Before that, 1 year management consulting and 1 year PM at startup which was acquired

Community service and awards:
- Executive/Board member of a thousands+ member non-profit
- Forbes 30 under 30

How did you get selected for Forbes 30 under 30? I am wondering what the criteria are, and how they found you. Thanks for any information.

Hi SimbaJSK,

Thank you for your post. The data points you provided are so minimal that it's difficult for me to evaluate your profile adequately. That said, here are a few tips:

As you pointed out, due to your demographic, an increased GMAT score will work in your favor. How are your academics? What is your GPA?

As to your professional experience, in the next 3-4 years (before applying) be mindful of having adequate leadership experience (receiving promotions will work in your favor). Sometimes, one's leadership is not reflected in the job title, so be innovative with your involvements.

I do not see any mention of community engagement, so you might also want to look for opportunities to get involved.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!
